Dr. Kurain - I Told Kalam He's Lucky I Chose Dairies

Pushing 80, Dr Verghese Kurien, the country’s legendary ‘doodhwala’, is not yet ready to hang his spurs. Credited with playing a stellar role in the implementation of Operation Flood, the cooperative movement in the dairy sector, and setting up of institutions like the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) and its Amul brand of utterly, butterly, delicious dairy products and the Institute of Rural Management, Anand, (IRMA), Dr Kurien is still an active and vocal champion of farmers’ rights in his dual capacity as Chairman of GCMMF and the National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India (NCDFI). Fiercely critical of the changes taking place in the dairy sector, especially the “corporatisation of the cooperative movement”, the grand old man has no qualms about calling a spade a spade. In a free-wheeling interview to Jyotsna Bhatnagar of FE, he talks about the state of the country’s dairy sector and the challenges ahead.
