Thank God - Kalam speaks up for IITs, IIMs

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam appears to have reservations about human resource development minister Murli Manohar Joshi’s efforts to recast IIMs and IITs.

The existing “brand images” of these institutions should be protected, the President said tonight in his address to the nation on the eve of Republic Day.

“The nation’s vision of developed India requires greater thrust to scientific and technological advancements. All our IITs, IIMs have graduated as world-class brand institutions in addition to the century-old premier institution — Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. These characteristics must be preserved and nurtured.”

If these institutions face problems in holding fair examinations, they could be addressed differently, he said.

The Telegraph - Calcutta : Nation

Mr. Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, will you stop making senseless statements about IIT's and IIM's and their standards and let them decide themselves how they want to function better. Democracy is not about putting the power in the hands of the center, its about giving the power to people who deal with the community. IIT's and IIM's are a community of intellictual people and the people invloved there know exactly how to take the benefits to more masses. If you think they are not doing enough towards that, then give directions like a learned intellectual, not destroy the whole process, don't hit the core of the education system for your political reasons.
