February 13, 2004Today Friday 13TH - R U AFRIAD?Today is Friday the Thirteenth. A day when millions of people will stay in bed, skip work, be extra careful or just worry, believing that the day will bring them bad luck. Today is double trouble for "friggatriskaidekaphobiologists -- people with a a morbid fear of Friday the 13th. A day of potential doom, gloom and disaster because it mixes two of the strongest superstitions -- Fear of Friday and fear of the number thirteen. Freaky Friday Fears of Friday the Thirteenth probably began because Jesus was believed to be killed on a Friday, and there were thirteen people, including Judas Iscariot, at the Last Supper. Both Friday and the number 13 were once closely associated with capital punishment. In European tradition, Friday was the conventional day for public hangings, and there were supposedly 13 steps leading up to the noose.
