Sari on the BBC - Debu By Saruna Sagar

sarisharuna.jpg
There was a time when Sari wearing women used to be sacked from their jobs in Britain. They were often taunted on the street. Most Sari wearing Asian women found the sartorial transition from traditional Sari to trousers and skirts very difficult. Leaving the years of agony behind today the Sari-wali women are determined to claim their rightful place in the British society and could there be a better place to demonstrate the charms of sumptuous Hyderabadi silk sari than the BBC News studio. When the BBC news reader Sharuna Sagar appeared in Sari for her nightly bulletin most of the audience loved it but then there were some Englishmen who were quite upset. "I was upset to see that newsreader was a Sari," wrote one of them. So was wearing sari on the Beeb a pre-planned planned move?

Soo, time for Indian Ladies to flaunt their beauty in wonderful sarees and feel good about it. Saree is the most georgeous dress a woman can wear, I am not trying to be fanatic, I am just telling that Indian woman can wear sarees and feel good about it too.

Veeeery fascinating article!! This is the 'n'th time I'm reading it! I may be a man but I really admire Sarees & ever since I read this article on Sharuna Sagar, I've become a loyal admirer of her for her interest & devotion to the Sari, even though she doesn't really have anything to do with India! I mean, someone like her, brought up in an outwardly racist country like Britain is striving for the right to display the Indian culture & tradition, while ironically, on the other hand, most of those so-called "Indian" women out there in India, who have the full freedom to wear Sarees, have started to abandon them, calling them "uncomfortable", "cumbersome" or "old-fashioned" and are now straying into Salwar Kameez & even western outfits from jeans to minis, without realising the value of this valuable Indian womens' attire! Please publish this article such that ALL those women in India get to know about Sharuna Sagar & realise how foolhardy they are being by belitting the Sari, which is the most vibrant representation of their own "Indian culture" that they always boast about!

Thanks very much for that article. Itīs not easy to learn that the own way isnīt something anyone would like to take over or to imitate.
