March 06, 2004Biodiesel - Boon to Rural IndiaD.K. Tuli, head of the research wing of Indian Oil Company, had read about biodiesel being used in 22 countries but had not given it much thought. After all, the chances of convincing his company heads about a diesel alternative were slim. He noticed hundreds of Karanjia trees in the 70-acre campus of the R&D division building. He collected a few kilos of seed to extract oil and blended it with diesel to make biodiesel and found that it worked beautifully without making modifications in the engine. In Europe, rapeseed oil and sunflower have been used for making biodiesel while its soyabean oil in the United States. Though India is deficient in edible oils like these but because of being in the tropics it has other trees that produce non-edible oils like Jatropha and Karanjia. These trees are fast-growing, do not need much looking after and are usually not eaten by animals. Source: B-Urja will be new rural mantra Hmm, may be I need to tell dad to do some of these plantation in our waste lands. Posted by: Ramdhan Yadav Kotamaraja at July 29, 2004 01:52 PMhey ram, nice site...i have been reading up a lot on biodiesel in india and around the world. i think i have enuf information to actually try something out. can u send me the same information u sent to sridhar plz...my grandpa has a farm in tamil nadu..i think it might be worth cultivating it there cos over the past 2 yrs they have been complaining abt the lack of rains...jhatropa and pungam(Karanjia) dont need much water. where can i get seeds for jhatropa and Karanjia. i think Karanjia dont grow on seeds...it needs to be grafted and so on..requires bit of care..grafting needs to be done for good yeilds i believe. well i look forward to your email. Posted by: Shyam Durai at August 4, 2004 06:34 AMThe Indian Biodiesel, you state, can be used without making modifications in the engine. Is there any long-standing experience with this Indian type of Biodiesel? The experience with Biodiesel here in Germany is somewhat different. Biodiesel originating from rape seed is chemically aggressive to hoses and gaskets. Nowadays, most motor car manufacturers provide their cars therefore with gaskets and hoses made of suitable material. Older cars can be converted by so called "adaption sets". These retrofits are costly and reduce the attractivity of such measures. Another obstacle is the (still) low number of petrol stations selling Biodiesel. One is therefore compelled to mix it with conventional Diesel which is allowed according to the fuel manufacturers´advice. However, using such mixtures can develope substanes which gradually lead to early clogging of the fuel filter. I'm intrested in bio diesel plant when ever you found time can you please mail me the details,, sir i did not find even a single sight who would tell us about the market to by the seeds of karangia which we have in abandance and no one cares for them as theese trees are used only for shade here if we know some one to bye then we can think of collecting the seeds. What is the starting cost etc. Posted by: Balbir Chaudhary at June 9, 2005 01:58 AMI have long interest in alternate fuel especially biodiesl. I have a privilege to work and developed a sophisticated patented technology based on Microchip process that will cut the huge capital cost of conventional biodiesel system without producing any side product such as glycerol etc. after transesterification and the yield is 100%. A commercial system has been working in the MidWest area since last Oct producing more than 10000 gallons (37500L/day) per day in a continuous process with a capital cost at least 10 times lesser than conventional biodiesel system. The quality of the biodiesel is superb excellent in BTU value higher than # 2 diesel, reduction in NOX etc. and the cost of the biodiesel is equal to #2 diesel.Any body is interested to know further, can reach me at Atlanta Ga or via email. ahmed_baosman@hotmail.com.
