As India prepares to elect a new government, the country’s leading political parties recently released their manifestos and vision statements. A comparison of the two documents shows just how much convergence there is in the thought processes of the two main political groupings when it comes to economic liberalisation.

India’s oldest party, the Congress, has moved away from the classical socialist/Nehruvian definition of ideological secularism. India’s nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the chief partner in the NDA coalition, has moved away from swadeshi economics (a version of protectionist economics that propagated the view that only Indians could develop India).
