Caribe - First Mobile Phone Software

Kaspersky Labs said that Cabir seems to have been developed by some global group that specialises in creating viruses to demonstrate that 'no technology is reliable and safe from their attacks.

The developers of Cabir apparently have not designed the virus - or worm - to propagate on a massive scale, but to demonstrate that cell phones and PDAs can be infected by malicious code.

This malicious code spreads to devices that run under Symbian OS, which is used in many models of phones, including some manufactured by Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericcson.

Cabir spreads in a file called 'Caribe.sis,' which installs itself automatically on the system when the user accepts the transmission. It displays a message on the screen with the text: 'Caribe' and then starts a continuous search for other devices to send itself to, although these must be connected via Bluetooth technology, says PandaSoftware.com.

Bluetooth's transmission range is 30 feet. The virus is only able to jump from phone to phone within that range. Also the phone must have the correct OS installed and the appropriate settings - that is, it has to be set for a known number.

It is able to scan for phones that are also using the Bluetooth technology and is able to send a copy of itself to the first handset that it finds.

On the other hand, it is possible that the Caribe.sis file copies itself to other devices using Bluetooth, such as some printers.

According to the anti-virus software developer F-Secure, the discovery of Cabir is proof that the technologies are now available to create viruses for mobile phones and that they are now known to the writers of computer viruses.

As the power of mobile phone is increasing and the bandwidth becoming cheaper and cheaper, the mobile phone ecology is opening up itself to viruses and hackers. So, now comes Semantic/Norton/MyMobileShield/etc.. to provide service in Mobile market :-)

One of the readers Khurrum has sent this link http://www.jamanda.com/ which seems to have fix for the virus. Please confirm yourself before downloading it.

May be you should check http://www.kaspersky.com/ too.

Hi, i recently received the caribe.sis virus via blue tooth. My battery isn't draining, in fact its lasting longer but i've had other problems with calls registering in my call register. When missing a call i can't find out who it was from. I have a Nokia 6600 and from today i sudenly can't use my menu button so my phone is more or less out of use. I've tried the recommended web pages you've mentioned but have had no luck getting onto them. Please give me any advice you can.

Alternatively, you can disinfect the system manually by installing a file manager or SeleQ or FExplorer application and manually deleting these files:

c:\system\apps\caribe\caribe.rsc
c:\system\apps\caribe\caribe.app
c:\system\apps\caribe\flo.mdl
c:\system\recogs\flo.mdl
c:\system\symbiansecuredata\caribesecuritymanager\caribe.app
c:\system\symbiansecuredata\caribesecuritymanager\caribe.rsc

I found the perfect file to erase all your worries on this stupid CARIBE file.

been up all night worrying about my nokia 7610 phone but all you have to do is go to www.jamanda.com and download the file which erases everything. Guaranteed.

I went to the site using my phone so downloading is easier and no hassle (from pc to phone etc)

Hope that helps. And the moral of the story is not to accept bluetooth files from strangers.

Cheers!

fuck people dont you use google go to f-secure.com or google caribe virus removal and f-secure will come up either use the stand alone remover or the anti-virus which is availible free for a tial period. also availible from WAP, if they dont work contact f-secure and im sure they'll be interested in what may be a new strain or a completly new virus, carbine will write the word carbine on an infetced phones screen from those who dont know, but new types may not.

Guys, what are you all doing here? Go download this file:

http://www.f-secure.com/tools/f-cabir.sis

Upload it to your phone (in any way, like over infrared or using mem card), install and run. It will clean your phone easily. Reboot and you are clean.

You can delete the antivirus after that, and don't forget to set your phone's visibility mode to hidden (in Bluetooth menu). Or switch off Bluetooth completely if you are not using it on a daily basis.

Posted by: KPbICMAH at September 19, 2005 02:36 AM

I received a message call "caribe" requesting that I install it immediately. I did so. I am having problem using my bluetooth. Equally, when I attempt to open the file,it fails to open and hangs my phone sytems until I exit.

Please assist, I do not want my phone to be damaged by this.

hello everyone,
like other guys i was really frustrated with the caribe.sis virus which was on my mobile 6600 nokia.when i was walking in the street at brigade in bangalore i got these virus.my phone works properly as it was before but it had some problem with the bluetooth connection.
now i 'll tell how i remove the caribe.sis virus.
first i download f-secure antivirus file in pc and send through bluetooth and remove the virus.after that my phone reboot and doesn't work at all.i got puzzle and confused.then i search for reboot code for a long time and finally got that the reboot code that was "3" "call button"& "*" button.all the three button should be press simultaneouslly and start the phone untill the word formatting ward appear in the screen of phone.after formatting now my phone work properly.
try this, i think simply formatting the phone will remove the caribe.sis virus
thank to internet for providing such facilities for searching code.

ok guys i just got rid of that file. go on the internet on your phone and type in jamanda.com. when ur on the site go to download cabir fix. it will get rid of the virus for you. its wicked!!

Posted by: Jemma at January 24, 2006 05:34 AM

no sweat no panic just instal software from jamanda.com. i used a blue tooth enabled imac. with my nokia 3650 . you may have to try to few times for bluetooth connection. whatever you do, do a few times to connect. once connected the file can be downloaded onto your phone and the process is as easy as 123!!!!!

Quite Funny how i had this funny virus. Well I got it off about 20-30minutes after i got it. I'm still keeping the Carbide.sis file in my inbox. I want a way to copy it onto my pc. Can i get help. This tool
http://www.f-secure.com/tools/f-cabir.sis is good. Just clears the thing like nothing. The one who did the virus anyway is intelligent and we all need him.

Posted by: Oliver at March 16, 2006 12:14 PM

I myself have had that 'Caribe' virus on my nokia handset, it has been driving me crazy. I have now thankfully found a soloution for nokia handsets, im not sure if it works on any other make of phone but its worth a go.
Simply go to the following link: http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/wap/downloads/decabir.sis, download it and transfer the software onto your phone, find the software in the menu of your phone and from then on it should be straight forward.

I hope it helps as I know how all of you are feeling!!

Posted by: ROBIN at May 15, 2006 01:41 AM

Hey i also had the caribe virus on my fone, really easy to get rid of...all u av to do is go to 'Tools' and then to 'App. Manager' click the caribe or comworrior file, (depending on which is affecting u) and then scroll to remove click that and u are rid of the virus...u might possible still hav a file or 2 from the virus, but with the actual caribe file itself deleted, these files cannot work..so dont worry!

Also when I turn on bluetooth it starts sending these messages. So at the moment my bluetooth is switched off. I think it my be caused by the caribe virus and I can not get rid of it. Its becoming difficult to use my phone and also I have to always charge my phone battery.

I can't believe there are losers out there who dedicate their time to creating these viruses/worms in order to inconvenience other people! I pity these people. My mobile has been infected with their "Caribe" shit. This ugly looking virus insisted on sending me 20 or more messages until the only way to make it stop contacting me was to "install" it. I hate it! One word for the creators of this virus :
KARMA.
