Steel titan Lakshmi Mittal is the wealthiest Indian, whereas Azim Premji and the Ambani brothers are the second and third richest in India, according to Forbes.

Forbes, which released its maiden list of the top 40 richest people in India, said, Lakshmi Mittal, valued at 11.2 billion dollars, is the wealthiest Indian. His Ispat International aims to become the world's largest steel company, the magazine said in a statement.

In the second place is Wipro Chairman Azim Premji with wealth of 10 billion dollars. Premji owns 84 per cent of Wipro, India's second biggest infotech company by revenues.

Mukesh and Anil Ambani of Reliance are ranked third with a wealth of 6.4 billion dollars, inherited from their father, Reliance Group's founder Dhirubhai Ambani, according to the December 20 edition of Forbes.

The two brothers are reportedly feuding over control of the Rs 90,000- crore Reliance group.

Ranked fourth is Kumar Mangalam Birla with 3.5 billion dollars. He is the fourth generation head of the Aditya Birla Group, India's largest cement producer.

Construction magnate and real estate developer, Pallonji Mistry is fifth on the list with wealth of 2.9 billion dollars.
