HESA Elections

Today I got an email about Harvard Extension Student Association Election. the details of the election are at HES website: http://hesa.dce.harvard.edu/. I am very excited to know that one of my classmate Carlos De La Rosa is running for HESA President and he seems to have a real plan to make HESA work. Carlos De La Rosa and his partner Andre Bisasor's plan for HES can be found at http://2008.centricast.net/

An excerpt from their plan:

Three Elements

If you have been attracted here by the Harvard reputation and brand, you should know that there are three key elements to extracting the most value from your sacrifice and investment of time:

Instruction – Institutions of this class excel at transmitting knowledge through lectures, readings, projects, and papers. There is always room for improvement, but, in the big picture, we do quite well.

Resources – We have access to fine facilities for learning and research, including the libraries, online resources, and distance education.

Connection – Most Harvard schools have students connected to each other and lift each other up after graduation. Students are also connected more closely with faculty and deeper into the heart of academia. This is a significant enabler for success – however you define it – after the degree. Alumni programs can help this along, but the heart of building those relationships and connections starts here and now.

Missing

In the Extension School, most are missing the community and cohesiveness that makes this possible. Here, we have an extremely diverse set of students and a “cellular” structure. Many people come in, take their classes and go home. At any given time, an average student may know five to ten other students from taking similar classes, group projects, and the like.

In a traditional college or graduate school, there is a residential component, class designation (e.g., Sophomore, First Year, etc.), and sometimes cohorts for particular concentrations or specialties. In that kind of situation, an average student may know 30 – 50 of his or her peers.

Here, most students already have a life. This campaign acknowledges that and respects that. We don’t want to compete against work, family, classes, or your home community responsibilities. We want to find the best way to compliment your life by getting the most from your Extension School investment.

Take a look at the candidates profile and vote candidates who you think are most eligible and committed to take HES forward.
