September 30, 2003Why do Indians put religion before nationality?François Gautier,French journalist and writer writes Why do Indians put religion before nationality? A good article on the real democrazy in India which you cannot see in any other western world. The Graham Staines story is also an eloquent testimony of the subtle and not-so-subtle influence that Christians have on this country. The murderer, Dara Singh, has been convicted to death. His was a horrible deed: to burn a man and his innocent children does deserve the capital punishment. Justice is thus done and the entire press - Indian and foreign - rightly rejoiced. But one may ask this question: What happens to the murderers of thousands of innocent Hindus who have been burnt, lacerated, bombed, raped, their eyes gauged, their homes ransacked? Why don’t their widows get the same sympathy as Mrs Staines? Because they are brown and Hindus and Mrs Staines is white and Christian? Don’t dismiss this again lightly: I remember a few days after Graham Staines was killed, 14 Hindu labourers were murdered in Himachal Pradesh by Muslims separatists. The entire English speaking Indian press devoted page after page of outrage on the killing of Staines, but the murder of the Hindus in HP only warranted a few lines in most newspapers without condemnation. I can understand that Western correspondents based in India show such a slant – even if it does not speak much for their fairness – but Indian journalists, most of them Hindus at that! And if Lyngdoh was really fair, he would have seen to it that the NDTV of Prannoy Roy and Rajdeep Sardesai, two brilliant journalists no doubt, was brought to the book for inflaming communal passions during Gujurat riots by constantly showing burnt people and broken bodies. In my country, France which is truly secular in the sense that the State and the Church are separated, because at some point the Church controlled enormous amount of land and political power, I doubt that a non-Catholic could become Election Commissioner (a post which does not exist anyway). It is a tribute to India’s openness and liberalism that a Christian holds that post, and that a Muslim is President of India at the moment, although Christians and Muslims often complain that they are discriminated against in India. Recently, French President Jacques Chirac asked every Frenchman, specially the French Muslims, ‘to be French first and Muslims second’. In India, one often finds that people put their religion before their nationality, particularly the Muslims and to a lesser degree the Christians. So Lyngdoh, are you a Christian and then an Indian? An Indian and then a Christian? Or simply an Indian?

September 29, 2003Cult Of NDAWhy the cult of the NDA? In our culture, we've elevated the creative new idea to be the core factor in determining whether a startup succeeds or fails. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth, but there's a chain of logic which leads inextricably to the NDA: 1) A unique new product or idea is essential to a startup's success. 2) The first company to capitalize on a new product or idea has a unique and sustainable advantage. 3) I have a unique idea for a new product or service. 4) If others find out about my unique idea, they could bring it to market first, and steal the advantage from me. 5) Therefore, by disclosing my idea only under the strictest confidentiality, I preserve an advantage for myself. Each of these five points is wrong in most cases, though they are a comforting fiction for a young company faced with long odds against success.

September 28, 2003India to emerge as knowledge power: Dr MashelkarNearly 80 per cent of India's spend on science and technology is still done by the government, with private industry participation at barely 20 per cent. The Indian government spends 1.1 per cent of its gross domestic product on research and development in science and technology. This figure has gone up compared to 1995-97 when the government's spend on R&D was just about 0.71 per cent. Most developed countries spend about 3 per cent of their GDP on R&D in science and technology. Yet Dr R A Mashelkar, director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the largest chain of industrial research and development institutions in the world, with 38 laboratories and about 22,000 employees, believes that India is poised to become the largest 'knowledge producer' in the world.

Goal Person Vs River Person[Via Rajesh Jain ]Conversations with Dina Goal People Most of us are undoubtedly familiar with goal people. They are the individuals who write down their objectives and timetables for reaching them, and then focus on attaining them, one by one. By laying out a roadmap of future achievements in front of them, goal people give their creative minds a clear set of stimuli to work on. Their subconscious minds can then get to work incubating ideas and insights that will help them to reach their goals. River People River people, on the other hand, don't like to follow such a structured route to success. They are called river people because they are happiest and most fulfilled when they are wading in a rich "river" of interest -- a subject or profession about which they are very passionate. While they may not have a concrete plan with measurable goals, river people are often successful because they are so passionate about their area of interest.

RedHat into J2EE SPaceRed Hat Plans Open Source J2EE, Clustering And Other Middleware > September 23, 2003 This looks exciting, still skeptical. There are already JBoss otu there, Apache foundation is working on Germanio and Red Hat J2EE server ?? Well a open source J2EE server backup up by cash cow like Red Hat, will certainly stand a chance in the long Run. But implementing the entire stack of Red Hat is like locking yourself to use Red Hat. Well, its still free, why not lock up?

September 21, 2003Power of Community Radio! This village is gaga over the radio: it changed its face forever India’s first independent, community radio initiative is in this millet-and-tomato growing village in Karnataka. It is a cable radio service because the Government forbids communities from using airwaves. A media advocacy group, with the help of UN funds, laid cables, sold subsidised radios with cable jacks to villagers and trained young people to run the station. ‘‘The power of community radio as a tool of social change is enormous in a country that is poor, illiterate and has a daunting diversity of languages and cultures,’’ says Ashish Sen, director of Voices, the advocacy group Since it began broadcasting in March, Our Voices community radio has crackled with the sounds of schoolchildren singing songs and giggling to jokes; of young girls talking fearlessly about the evils of dowry and admonishing boys for teasing them at school; of women giving out recipes and teaching others how to open a bank account; and, of farmers debating the vagaries of weather and fluctuating crop prices.

4 INDIANS IN MIT FUTURE LIST!Well, this is no surprise: 4 Indians in MIT future list, an article in Indian express. Six years ago, Vipul Prakash was a Delhi University computer jock who shunned the city’s great outdoors and spent his time fiddling around his binary universe. But there were just so many computers, and Prakash was frustrated. In 1997, he finally dropped out of DU for, as he puts it, ‘‘want of undisturbed coding time’’.
This week Prakash (25) will burst into prominence as one of four Indians chosen by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) among 100 of the world’s top young innovators. The others are Tufts University chemistry professor Krishna Kumar (32), Iowa State University chemical engineering professor Balaji Narasimhan (31), and Ravikanth Pappu (33), a principal and materials whiz at a cutting-edge company called ThingMagic in Cambridge, Massachusetts. All of them will be honoured on September 25 at MIT in a gathering of the who’s who of America’s scientific and business community. The listing, now in its third year, was created after the dotcom bust to tell the world that innovation is flourishing yet, to appraise the world of lab dwellers, visionaries and deal makers who will ‘‘transform our world in the years to come’’. All 100 will be revealed in the MIT magazine Technology Review. I need to get some recognition like that and I am sure its going to be real fun.

Speech By Anil Ambani on EntreprenuershipAnil Ambani of Reliance Industries recently gave a convocation address at the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad. Some Excerpts: Across diverse sectors internationally, the "Made in India" tag is now an increasingly respected brand, valued for quality, reliability, It is often said, people, who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the only ones that actually do! I believe the first, and perhaps most important, requirement for success, as an entrepreneur, is a passion for your work. To be able to look forward, to every new day of work, with a sense of optimism, with a sense of purpose, with a sense of challenge, and with a view to enjoying the work you are doing! Absence of experience can be made up through training and on-the-job performance, but lack of basic competence can never be made up. To guide you in this exciting journey of entrepreneurship, I would like to end my comments today, by sharing with you the guru-mantras for all entrepreneurs: Relationship and Trust – these are the foundations of success. If you work with determination and with perfection, success will follow. Meeting deadlines is not good enough. Beating deadlines is what is required. Pursue your goals even in the face of difficulties. In every adversity, there is opportunity. Do not accept defeat. Challenge negative forces. The past will give in. You will certainly succeed. Never give up. Hope is your most powerful weapon. Self-confidence is your greatest asset. Ordinary people, when motivated, achieve extraordinary things. Pedigree is no longer of any significance in modern India. It is performance that is crucial. Recognition is your greatest reward. Work till your last breath. Work is worship.

Dear Sir, He is a student of Delhi Public School Rourkela and his date of birth is 13/02/1988. He is now 16 years old. Before I proceed further, I would like to mention about the career he wants to pursue. He wants to be a researcher or scientist as shown in TV Channel "National Geographic Channel". He does not want to study Engineering or Medical instead wants to pursue graduation in Pure Sciences in the areas of Environment or Ecology. I am highlighting here some of his achievements so far in these areas so that you can also understand his bent of mind. In class-VII he undertook a science project related to environment "Man-nature conflict: a case study of the mining areas of Orissa". He represented the State of Orissa in the National Children's Science Congress (NCSC) meet held at Goa in Dec'1999 and thereafter was selected to participate in the "Indian Science Congress" (ISC) and Child Scientist Meet held at Pune in Jan'2000 which was presided upon by the Prime Minister of India. In class VIII he was the member of the team which took up another environment related science project titled: "Storage and preservation of paddy using agricultural waste". This was also selected for the NCSC and ISC in 2000-01. In class-IX he took up yet another environmental project:"Cow-dung: The legacy of an ancient pesticide discovered". This won the 1st prize at the Intel Science Talent Discovery Fair organized by M/S INTEL at I.I.T. Delhi. Apart from winning a P-IV home P.C. he was selected to represent India at the International Science & Engineering Fair held at Louis Ville, Kentucky U.S.A. in May'02 where participants from more than 50 countries took part. This fair is considered to be the Olympics of Science Fairs. While in U.S.A. he had the opportunity to visit some educational institutions and universities and he was thrilled at the facilities available there as well as the wide range of courses available for undertaking studies at graduation level. Since then he is nurturing the desire to study in U.S.A. He is accordingly also preparing for SAT exams. Academically he is a bright student. He also takes active part in sports and extra curricular activities and has many firsts to his credit in these areas viz: Debates, elocution etc. I am an engineer employed in SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant for last 24 years. Besides Vaibhav I have another son who is studying in class-IX. My wife is an English teacher in the same school. I do not have the resources to fulfill his dreams for studies abroad at the under graduate level. Mr. Arvind Gupta, Well you have posted the message at the wrong place, this is my personal website. Well I would love to forward this message to Reliance Industries if I had access, unfortunately I don't. If anybody out there reads this message and has the ability to send the message to the right place please do the same. Posted by Ramdhan Kotamaraja. Sun unveils radical re-think of software strategySun Microsystems officially launched an oft-discussed radical revamp of its software strategy during its SunNetwork conference in San Francisco yesterday. This Article talks in the lines of what Rajesh Jain talks about Thin Client/Think Server concept. I wonder if SUN got its idea from his blogger. The new integrated desktop, server and developer packages were unveiled under a new Sun Java System banner. Sun officials claimed that the new product line brings 225 separate products into the six Java System bundles, which include Sun Java Enterprise System (code-named "Project Orion"), the Sun Java Desktop System (code-named "Mad Hatter"), Java Studio (its developer toolset), the Sun Java Mobility System, the Sun Java Card System, and Sun N1 for dynamic and utility computing, amazingly even the pricing concept also. The Java Enterprise System package combines Sun's entire network services architecture, including the SunONE Directory, Application Server and a suite of Java 2 Enterprise Edition applications that includes Identification/Access Server, Portal Server, E-mail/Messaging Server, Calendar Server, Instant Messaging, Collaboration Server and the Solaris operating system. The Sun Java Desktop System runs on the open-source Linux operating system and combines several client applications, including the new StarOffice 7, the Mozilla open-source browser, a full-featured e-mail and collaboration suite, RealNetworks' RealONE player and Macromedia Flash. The Java Desktop System is priced at $100 per desktop, or $50 per employee per year. In addition, the Studio product is priced at $5 per employee if bought with the Java Enterprise System, or $1,895 if purchased separately.

September 16, 2003BPM Graphical Designer Study - II started going arround Sourceforge and came across this beautiful graphic tool JGraph which has a solid base of Graphical represenation stuff, along with a editor JGraphPad. Its facinating to find that there are lots of people contributing to open source in such an amazing manner to develop cool stuff. I can use this tool as a foundation for Visual Biz-ic development. For that purpose, as there is no proper documentation availabe, first of all I need to read up the available articles and documents and then understand all the api's thoroughly and its like I need to get the whole api on finger tips and be able to extend it for my purpose of tool development. Well, this JGraphPad is going to be one of the component of the Visual Biz-ic. JBPMGraph has the following pacakges org.jgraph which looks like a combination of both JGraph and JGraphPad.

September 15, 2003BPM - Half Full or Half Empty? An artilce on EAIJournal about BPM. It talks about how Software Development has progressed from Monolithic applications to Client/Server, 3 tier(Client/Business Logic/Model) and now getting evolved into 4 tier(Cleint/{Process Logic / Business Logic }/Model). The article discusses about the advantages and pit falls of the new Process Logic layer. Talks about the concept of Colloborative BPM. --> Work Flow represents the oldest category and is defined by the structured orchestration of tasks or documents between people. The article discusses CBPM as the solution. CBPM suits processes that are highly non-liner processes and requires human judgement.

BPM is an integral part of what constitues SOA (Service oriented Architecture). Its evolving along with other parts of it. I think it will be early to make judegemnts on this, as what is good and bad about it. Give it some time to mature and than we can disect this. And CBPM looks interesting... something to explore.. i presume. Posted by Vishal.Bring Business Logic to LightHere is a link for review on JRules. September 12, 2003Bhagavan Jab Deta Hai, Chappar phad ke deta hai!Well, yes it been a very satisfiying day. Talked to Rajesh and Reena in the morning, and its a wonderful feeling talking to a successful visionary like Rajesh and an accomplished person like Reena. The best thing that Rajesh told was 'You guys completely understood what I am talking about, I had a tough time explaing people what it is all about.' This thing is like a validation of our thoughts from Visionary and its an amazing feeling. Looks like my CAN-I is working and I want it to work more and more and generate lots of ideas. In the evening talked to Mark and Kishan. That was an awesome discussion, and looks like we can work out something really really cool and may be come up with a team or something like that in the near future and may be brainstorm more and merge ideas and come up with some workable solution. Its an awesomeda, a day to remember, as a turning point in life.

September 11, 2003Working with Idiots can kill you!I personally feel that, this is true to some extent. This thing usually happens when you are in a position that you cannot actually control the person. But you should find ways to get over this problem if it becomes imperative to work with them and find ways to actually let that kind of stress out through some channels like discussing with your boss about the problem and if you are the boss, may be you should get rid of the resource (which I did even when I was not the boss.)

Drawback of working in a cubicle10. Being told to "think outside the box" when you're in a freakin' box all day long. 9. Not being able to check e-mail attachments without turning around to see who's behind you. 8. Cubicle walls do not offer much protection from any kind of gunfire. 7. That nagging feeling that if you press the right button, you'll get a piece of cheese. 6. Lack of roof rafters for the noose. 5. The walls are too close together for the hammock to work right. 4. 23 power cords - 1 outlet. 3. Prison cells are not only bigger, they also have beds. 2. The carpet has been there since 1976 and shows more signs of life than your coworkers. And the number 1 drawback to working in a cubicle is... 1. You can't walk out and slam the door when you quit.

Bruce Tate Talk!Bruce Tate, author of Bitter java, Bitter EJB, currently writing a book on Hybernate gave an awesoem speech in JavaMug meeting yesterday, the best speech until now in 2003. The best of the speech is that I got clarified that Hybernate is the way to go for OR mapping, despite it being a open source product. Well, with the current following it is having in the market, its going to be darling of open source for next couple of years and so should be very much ok to rely on. After a couple of years the app. servers are going to get so matures that you can plug in and out any persistance frame work and play with them. As of now, Hybernate is the way to go.

Me in TimesSquare before NASDAQ!It was a real emotional moment, I was all pumped up at Times Square. I just wondered when i saw the pics from NYC, its been long time that I had such energetic smile on my face. NYC really pumped me up to new spirits, its a wonderful city. The struggles of recession in US has taken away smiles from almost everybodys face, i guess even from mine and I am so excited to see my brand of graceful look.

very nice How cute!!!! It's now my backround!!!!! Posted by Courtney.September 09, 2003BPM PresenationWow, finally today made a presentation on BPM in webservices user group. Ismael Ghalimi, frounder of www.bpmi.org participated from CA, via speaker phone. I handled the presentation material for him. He gave a presentation for about an hour covering the basics of BPML, BPEL, BPEL4WS, BPMN etc. I found out that it was very stressful on the part of the listeners as they have to put all their ears and listen to the speaker phone. Its kind of experiement, which would have been really good if the speaker phone was good and may be connected to mike so that its more audible. After that Srihari made the second part of the

Private and Confidential From Robert Holley Greetings From Robert Holley. Writing to seek your consent in a private and confidential matter regarding some funds unaccounted for in my bank here in South Africa during the last 2005 business year. I need assistance from a trust worthy and reliable person whom I will fill in as the beneficiary. Your major role would be to provide either an existing bank account or to set up a new Bank account immediately to receive this money and get 30% of the total funds as commission. There are practically no risks involved, Truly yours Making Software Service same as cellular service! While going through Reuters Report and Rajesh Jains TECH TALK: The Next Billion: From Where? , I started thinking about the possibility of next billion computers. According to Rajesh the next billion computers can be only from the developing countries and emerging markets. Now how can we tap into that market? Last weekend I went to Tulsa, OK, to meet Prasad and family and there I came across a business model where the whole hardware/infrastructure is given away free of cost and charge for the service. This helps to penetrate into the current tough markets where there is no money. The same rule can be applied to the markets which are not yet tapped in developing markets. The major issue for these markets is, the SME's will not be ready to invest huge amounts of money into hardware and software and experiment. So taking risk is the biggest mental block for these SME's. What if, we can take that risk away from them by giving away hardware freely or by giving the hardware at nominal rates based on the service contract of a couple of years. It is just like extending the Cellular phone business model to the Software service industry and tap into the billiions of dollars SME's market. Hope somebody is listening and going to give me the chance to experiement in this direction.

September 08, 2003Re-Engineering SecurityAn article on CIO Insight. No surprise, says Christopher Klaus, CTO of Atlanta-based Internet Security Systems Inc: "When you total how much it would cost to roll out security patches rigorously in a Fortune 1,000 environment, the result could easily be more than $20 million. Say it takes four hours to install each patch and make sure the applications still work. Say you're paying someone $80 an hour to do this and it costs $320 to patch that one machine and you have 1,000 servers in your environment. That's now $320,000. Multiply that by a conservative estimate of five as the number of Microsoft and Linux and Cisco and Oracle patches each month, multiply that again by 12 months, and it's about $20 million." Most, Klaus says, would not even try due to sheer cost and manpower considerations. And according to a recent CERT report, many system administrators don't install all the security patches issued "because they don't know how, do not have the resources, do not maintain all of the computers or have computer users who will not let them."
