Can the India-China border issue ever be solved?

Finally, in October 1957, a Chinese newspaper reported: 'The Sinkiang-Tibet -- the highest highway in the world -- has been completed… The Sinkiang-Tibet Highway is 1,179 km long, of which 915 km are more than 4,000 meters above sea level; 130 km of it over 5,000 meters above sea level, with the highest point being 5,500 meters."

The circle was closed. The two newly-acquired Western provinces of Communist China (Sinkiang and Tibet) were linked.

The tragedy is that it took nearly two more years for the news to become public in India. Only in August 1959 did Nehru drop the bombshell in the Lok Sabha: the 'Tibet-Sinkiang highway' was cutting through Indian territory.

The prime minister had kept the information secret for more than 5 years!

Today, fifty years later, what can be done about it?

Although during the 1960 negotiations on the border issue Indian officials proved beyond doubt that Aksai Chin was a part of Ladakh, the fact is the Chinese have now occupied the area for half a century.

Will the Chinese ever relinquish this strategic artery?

NO.

And for India: is it conceivable that any government (especially during an election year) could 'gift' away such a large chunk of Indian territory?

Besides, what could India receive from Beijing in return for such a 'gift'? The recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as being a part of India has been mentioned as a possible compensation. But this does not make any sense as the Chinese claim on Arunachal is legally and historically empty of any substance.

On the Chinese side, the new leadership in Beijing knows very well that ultimately it is in China's interest to settle this long outstanding issue with India and put the relationship between the two nations on sounder tracks.

At one point in time, an idea was mooted to have an international board of 'neutral' historians who would ascertain both China and India's claims. But one can doubt if Beijing would ever accept such an arbitration: their 'historical' case is too weak.

But with both parties firm on their respective stands, is there a possible solution where no party would lose face?

How can this issue be solved?

An innovative solution could be to create a condominium for the Aksai-Chin-Lizingthang area. The region could be jointly administrated by Beijing and New Delhi through two appointed commissioners (or whatever other designation may be agreed upon).

One small grace in this intractable problem is that very little development is possible (apart from a road) in the region due to the lack of water, the high salinity (a part is known as the Soda Plain) as well as the high altitude. In this sense, Nehru was right when he said that not a blade of grass could grow there. This would make the condominium solution far easier to work out. Practical modalities would have to keep in view the fact that China needs the road to connect Tibet to Xinjiang.

The concept of condominium was popularised in the 18th century, when hundreds of small principalities were in existence. Very often, they were not self-sufficient and found it difficult to survive. In a few cases, they appealed to two princes for help and protection. Was it not safer to have two protectors instead of one? Things changed in the 20th century with the birth of the League of Nations and, later the United Nations Organisation. From that time, only one ruler could be recognised for a given territory.

A condominium for Aksai Chin would not face many of the challenges that other condominiums had to confront. First and foremost, nobody lives permanently on the high plateau. Therefore, there is no question of stakeholders other than the two States: India and China. Secondly, no natural resources such oil, minerals have been discovered so far, therefore there is no need for a complicated sharing mechanism.

India and China needs to get over these issues and move ahead in making Asia the best continent on earth in the coming decades together.

“But this does not make any sense as the Chinese claim on Arunachal is legally and historically empty of any substance.”

It may interest you that Nehru's book "Discovery of India" has a map of India that was used widely at that time. Try to pick up this book the next time you are in a library. The map shows Arunachal as a part of Tibet. The Tibetans even lodged a protest against the British when they started showing the territory as a part of British India. Zhou En Lai, the Chinese foreign minister suggested this to Nehru through an intermediate and Nehru could not reply. In fact it was a gesture on China's part to withdraw from the Arunachal. The Chinese commanders were not happy with this decision but Zhou was able to convince them that Aksai Chin is strategically more important to them compared to Aruanchal. Also, Mao used the conflict to teach Nehru a lesson.

Also why does India want to keep Aksai Chin? It is a desolated place with zero population. What India should be worried more is about the Northeast region. Growing apathy towards this region has resulted in the local population themselves not considering themselves as Indians. While Chinese record in Tibet is no better, at least it has made attempts in recent years to put money and development in Tibet. An average teenage Tibetan (unlike the average Naga) today does not want the gun, she wants to integrate with the Chinese economy and make some money.

H1-B cap to be 'raised' for students

There is a glimmer of hope for Indian students studying abroad , especially those who intend to work in the US after completing their higher studies.

Representative Lamar Smith has introduced a bill, the American Workforce Improvement and Jobs Protection Act (HR 4166) in the US house of representatives.

The bill is being co-sponsored by five other representatives. If passed, the annual H1-B cap of 65,000 would not apply to applicants who have received a masters or higher degree from an American institution of higher learning. This exemption would be limited to 20,000 visas. Indian students accounted for nearly 13% of all foreign students in the US. In ‘02-03, there were 74,603 Indian students in American universities and colleges. Of these, 78.2% were graduate students.

In a sense, the proposed legislation will effectively “extend” the H-1B cap by 20,000 workers per year. Those co-sponsoring the bill are: John Carter, Jeff Flake, Steve Chabot, Bob Goodlatte, and Howard McKeon. The proposed bill incorporates legislation proposed by Senator Saxby Chambliss (S 1635), which would modify the L visa category.

Among the changes proposed by the Smith bill is the reinstating of the $1,000 H-1B training fee and the attestations required of H-1B-dependent employers. The bill suggests that these clauses be made permanent. Both clauses expired in September ‘03.

It proposes the imposition of a new “fraud detection and prevention fee” of $500 for H-1B and L visa applications . The bill also asks for permanent reinstating of the investigative authority of the US department of labour (DOL), which also came to an end in September ‘03.

What makes the bill interesting is the change in Lamar Smith’s attitude to the H1-B visa holder. Smith has known to take conservative positions on immigration in the past, as the chairman of the US house subcommittee on immigration, of which he continues to be a member.

A second-generation Indian and his discontents

In SiliconIndia, A second generation Indian American writes about his species.

AS A SECOND-GENERATION Indian freshly graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, I thought I would take this opportunity to reflect briefly on some of the more unusual aspects of the second-generation experience. I should observe, at the outset, that I am not your “typical” second-generation Indian (if such a category can even be said to exist). To the great puzzlement and thinly veiled chagrin of my parents, I decided to study literature and philosophy in college, marking a radical departure from the traditional—and eminently more practical—career paths which many second-generation Indians tend to pursue, such as medicine, law, science, or engineering. But my iconoclasm, as it turns out, runs still deeper. During my time at Berkeley, I noticed two curious phenomena among second-generation Indian students which I have never been able to understand, let alone participate in.

Phenomenon 1: Being “cultural” Within days of setting foot on the Berkeley campus as an impressionable first-year student, I was repeatedly accosted by eager members of Indus, the Indian cultural organization at Berkeley, enthusiastically urging me to join their club. “What does Indus have to offer?” I asked, with an air of skeptical bemusement. Their answer: it’s a way of getting back to your Indian “roots,” appreciating your rich Indian culture. A noble aim, indeed, but does Indus live up to its mission statement? Before long, I discovered what Indus really was: a glorified dating club. As it turned out, getting back to one’s Indian roots was a euphemism for the hopelessly parochial and implicitly (though, for that reason, all the more insidiously) racist agenda of associating only with other Indians. Needless to say, I promptly declined the invitation to join. So long as being “cultural” means nothing more than complacently fraternizing with members of one’s own ethnic background, I remain content appreciating Indian culture in my own way: by, for example, mining the inexhaustible riches of the Bhagavad-Gita and visiting my relatives in India.

Phenomenon 2: The Indian “thug” A second, related—and, perhaps, even more startling—phenomenon among second-generation Indians at Berkeley is the increasingly large number of Indian males who seem to be convinced that they were raised in the “ghetto” (or “’da hood” as they might call it). Strolling through campus on any given day, it is not difficult to spot a group of Indian males sporting backward baseball caps, ostentatious gold chains and earrings, extra-extra-large basketball jerseys, and jeans so baggy that they hang below their underwear. An innocent fashion statement? Perhaps. But it is surely a little strange—if not downright inexplicable—that the children of generally middle-class Indian parents raised in suburbia behave and dress as if they belong in a rap video. If one happened to be eavesdropping, a typical snatch of conversation between these self-proclaimed Indian “thugs” (let’s call them “Rajiv” and “Sanjeet”) might go something like this:

Rajiv: Yo, wuddup dawg!

Sanjeet: Wussup, fool!

Rajiv: Chillin’, chillin’. Yo, I just picked up the new
Dr. Dre album. That sh—’s off the hook!

Sanjeet: Fo’ real, though. Dre is hella tight.

And so on, ad nauseam. But whence this desire to behave like a “thug”? Is it just another case of teenage rebellion against cultural norms? Or is it, perhaps, the result of a deeper phenomenon unique to members of the second-generation: namely, a collective identity crisis? Indeed, the pressing question, Who are we?, looms large among second-generation Indians, and the answer is not a straightforward one.

When someone asks me where I’m from, I invariably hesitate, then proceed to explain that I was born and raised in Boston, but my family is from India. So where does that place me? Apparently, in a hybrid category that resists any neat label, and the term “Indian American” does little justice to this irreducibly complex hybridity.

Faced with this difficult fact, many second-generation Indians have assumed the relatively stable, though disingenuous, identity of a “thug,” while others have retreated into the false solace of “being cultural.” Whatever the causes of these phenomena among second-generation Indians, they are quickly becoming facts to be reckoned with.

What you say?

LMAO about the Indian thughs, it's soooo funny and TRUE!!! Raised in suburbia yet ghetto??? Oh my....

Posted by seyd.

As a down to earth Indian American guy, I have NEVER understood the "Indian thug" phenomenon. And it is nothing new either. I am 29 years old, and I remember waaaay back in the 80s when I was in elementary and middle school there were plenty of Indian thugs running around. A lot of these guys can be pretty crazy too. I think it probably has to do with us Indians being people of color, especially since we are generally dark, very dark, sometimes even black skinned people. Indian guys probably want to align themselves with the hyper-masculine behavior of many ghetto Blacks and ghetto Hispanics. That's been my theory since I was like 10 years old back in the 80s. And I'm not talking about simply liking Tupac or something like that, I like 2pac and a lot of rap. Liking rap doesn't make you an embarrassing thug. Infact I know plenty of decent, young Indian engineers, accountants, and medical school students that like rap. But they are like me, middle of the road down to earth young adults. It's these hyper-masculine Indian thugs or arrogant punks that I never understood. WTF is wrong with them, always trying to act like Tyrone from da hood. I didn't understand it when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, and not now as a 29 year old in 2004. How did they get that way if they were raised in the suburbs? Some of them were raised in really nice, posh suburbs too. And what in the world happened to those dudes that were running around acting so hard as 19 year old kids back in 1986? Are they hardcore 37 year olds today? What do the hard Indian teenage kids today think of them (since generally in the 80s and most of the 90s there weren't many Indians as "uncles" or "aunties" raised in America over the age of 30)? The outrageous thing is that generally the Blacks and Hispanics I have met that come from middle or upper middle class backgrounds don't act hyper-masculine. Generally only Indians are so embarrassing to act that way.

You are all arrogant idiots. Kids are going through an identity crisis. As a society (American) so obsessed with individuality, we try to find our roots, try to define ourselves. We live in a western society and when we come home we are in a typical "pseudo-modern" Indian setting. These kids have nobody and nothing to identify with; they are not traditional and yet cannot break their bonds with tradition. Being a foreign student in the past, I've seen and been through some of things that these kids go through. One is never "truly" accepted in society, whether it is a classroom setting or social gathering. No how you look, how intelligent you are, the bottom line is that you are still an Indian. For these kids, they are trying to break that thread that ties them to this "outcast" stereotype. Of course they are pretty stupid to be trying to act like something that they are not, however, they are just trying to "fit" in society. Bad choice but that's the reason.
And yeah thanks for giving us the great example of how a few Indian thugs speak....fool. Bet you know a lot about “Dr DRE”.

Funny how we stereotype people when we ourselves have been a target of stereotypes. As Indians, we love positive stereotypes. May I remind you that every kind of stereotyping is bad?

Posted by Tariq Summar.

whoa buddy [tariq]...if you haven't realized, these kids who act all ghetto and use asian clubs as a secret desi dating club, are all ashamed of their culture...
they aren't looking to adapt to the closest culture they see, they just don't want people to know that they are a part of the indian society...
duh!
and btw, no one cares about dr. dre anymore, you are prolly under the category of whom the writer is writing about.

Posted by Shalu.

Zach: no a fence but you are a moron. NOT all stereotypes are bad, you are getting stigma and sterotyping mixed up. Stigma is never good. Stereotypes are used for people to try to understand how to "act" around individual they have never met before.

Reliance first Indian private firm to cross $1 B profits

siliconindia Reports:

Diversified conglomerate Reliance Industries said Thursday its net profit for 2003-04 had crossed the $1 billion mark to become India's first private sector enterprise to reach the milestone.

"The financial year 2003-04 has been yet another landmark year in the history of Reliance," said Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited.

"We have become the first company in the private sector in India to record a profit of over $1 billion in a year," said Ambani who took over the group's management from Dhirubhai Ambani, the legendary first-generation entrepreneur.

It is known that breaking a milestone is tough, but once it is broken by somebody, it becomes easier for others to break it, and consequently new targets are set. So, its time to see $1billion dollar mile stone conqurred by many more Indian companies and look forward to watch $2billion mile stone taken over.

Cheers Reliance....................

Time to Assert - India's not the only winner

WHEN praise and support for global offshore outsourcing comes from an economist and a Nobel Laureate at that, it is an opportune time for supporters and bashers of offshore outsourcing to sit up and take notice. Early this month, the Nobel Laureate, Dr Lawrence Klein and Global Insight, the economic consultancy, released a study titled "The Comprehensive Impact of Offshore IT Software and Services Outsourcing on the US Economy and IT Industry."

The key findings of this study reflect a telling impact on the US economy, namely:

  • All-round economic impact: The cost savings and use of offshore resources will lower inflation, increase productivity and lower interest rates in the US economy. This will help boost business and consumer spending and increase economic activity.

  • Real GDP increase: The real Gross Domestic Product in the US increased by $33.6 billion in 2003 and is expected to be $124.2 billion higher by 2008 than it would be in an environment in which offshore IT software and services were not to occur.

  • Reason for jobless recovery: Though union workers in the IT and communications industry have attributed `jobless recovery' in the US to offshoring of jobs, most of the lost jobs were due to the bursting of the dotcom and telecom bubble.

  • Employment gets a leg-up: The offshoring effect is increasing the total employment in the US as its economic effects ripple through the economy. The incremental economic activity that followed offshore IT outsourcing has created over 90,000 net new jobs as of 2003 and is expected to create 3,17,000 net new jobs by 2008. There are several industry groups that are likely to gain from these incremental jobs.

  • Real wages will rise: Exploding the popular myth that offshoring will lead to jobs which will be lower paying, this study states that offshore IT software and services outsourcing will actually increase the average real wages of US workers by 0.44 per cent in 2008. This will be on account of lower inflation and higher productivity.
Eeconomic logic, however compelling it may be, will not make much headway in an election year in the US, so India will have to demonstrate its willingness to engage in `bilateral negotiations' with the US. Since India also stands to gain immensely from the `offshoring wave,' the Indian Government, with private sector IT companies and Nasscom, will have to work simultaneously on three fronts:

  • Urge a globalisation debate: India will have to repeatedly show that there are three factors which are playing a key role in making offshore outsourcing happen: round-the-clock-service, high-quality English-speaking engineering professionals and lower wages. The globalisation of `white collar jobs' seems an inevitable process as software multinationals who have set up operations or outsourced to India have repeatedly said that they were attracted to India by lower wages, but have stayed on account of high quality.

  • Removal of trade and services barriers: In order to improve its credibility in pushing the globalisation argument, the Indian Government will have to remove whatever trade and service barriers it has imposed so far.
Or at least, it will have to articulate a time-bound plan to do so. Speaking to eWorld at the Nasscom 2004 conference at Mumbai in February, Jeff Lande, Vice-President, Information Technology Association of India, said that if globalisation has to thrive, there has to be a level playing field. "India has not opened up its markets fully. There has been some progress made, but more has to be done there. The US markets are about as open now than anywhere in the world. So, we need that level to be established," he said.

This is an issue the Indian Government will have to work on immediately.

And the earlier it removes the barriers, the more bargaining power it will gain in international negotiations.

  • Protect security, data privacy and intellectual property: Even as offshoring becomes a mainstream activity, there are three areas on which greater attention will have to be devoted going forward: security, data privacy and intellectual property.

Increasingly, as multinational companies hand over critical contracts to Indian companies, they will call for greater comfort level on these aspects.

Any laxity on this account may cost the Indian software companies dearly in the long run. And the ripple effect of this will be on the entire Indian economy. The sooner the Indian second and third-rung IT companies wake up to this reality, the better it will be for the industry at large.

How Long Can BEA Survive Against IBM?

According to the Gartner Report published last May, in 2002 IBM pulled ahead of BEA Systems for the first time and gained leadership of the J2EE application server market by walking away with a 37% market share; BEA dropped to second place with 29% of the market. The year before, in 2001, Gartner reported that BEA had 34% of the market share, with IBM close behind at 31%.

Recently, application server vendors have been extending their products to offer an application platform suite: a modern end-to-end platform for business applications. On the way, they are leaving behind the old standards and technologies. BEA Systems has rewritten BEA WebLogic Integration to compete with leading integration specialists. Its key differentiating premise is the convergence of development and integration.

One comment posted for the article says:

I hope the best for bea as they have and by far the best product. IBM is mostly chosen when they are already in the place (as microsoft, you start with them and then you have no real choice to go with other products) or for political reason. I have used both weblogic and websphere and I can tell you that from a pure technical side, developpers are much more productive with BEA and they control much more of whats done under the cover.
Unfortunately we all know that the choice of a J2EE container is most of the time not based on technical advantages.

Methology of Esablishing Company Policies

This one is brilliant.....read on...it makes lot of sense!

Put eight monkeys in a room. In the middle of the room is a ladder, leading to a bunch of bananas hanging from a hook on the ceiling. Each time a monkey tries to climb the ladder, all the monkeys are sprayed with ice water, which makes them miserable.

Soon enough, whenever a monkey attempts to climb the ladder, all of the other monkeys, not wanting to be sprayed, set upon him and beat him up. Soon, none of the eight monkeys ever attempts to climb the ladder. One of the Original monkeys is then removed, and a new monkey is put in the room.

Seeing the bananas and the ladder, he wonders why none of the other monkeys are doing the obvious, but, undaunted, he immediately begins to climb the ladder.

All the other monkeys fall upon him and beat him silly. He has no idea why. However, he no longer attempts to climb the ladder. A second original monkey is removed and replaced. The newcomer again attempts to climb the ladder, but all the other monkeys hammer the crap out of him. This includes the previous new monkey, who, grateful that he's not on the Receiving end this time, participates in the beating because all the other monkeys are doing it. However, he has no idea why he's attacking the new monkey.

One by one, all the original monkeys are replaced. Eight new monkeys are now in the room. None of them have ever been sprayed by ice water. None of them attempt to climb the ladder. All of them will enthusiastically beat up any new monkey who tries, without having any idea why.

"AND THAT'S HOW ANY COMPANY'S POLICIES GET ESTABLISHED".

Polish Joke

A Polish man married a Canadian girl after he had been in Canada a year
or so and, although his English was far from perfect, they got on very well.
Until one day he rushed into a lawyer's office and asked him if he could arrange a divorce for him-"very quick".
The lawyer said that the speed of getting a divorce would depend on the circumstances and asked him the following questions:

LAWYER: Have you any grounds?
POLE: JA, JA, an acre and half and a nice little home with 3 bedrooms.
LAWYER "No," I mean what is the foundation of this case?"
POLE: "It is made of concrete, brick and mortar," he responded.
LAWYER: "Does either of you have a real grudge?"
POLE: "No," he replied, "We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one."
LAWYER "I mean, What are your relations like?"
POLE: "All my relations are in Poland."
LAWYER: "is there any infidelity in your marriage?"
POLE: "Yes, we have hi fidelity stereo set & DVD player with 6.1 sound. We don't necessarily like the music, but the answer to your questions is yes."
LAWYER: No, I mean Does your wife beat you up?
POLE: NO, I'm always up before her.
LAWYER: Is your wife a nagger?
POLE: NO, she white.
LAWYER: WHY do you want this divorce?
POLE: SHE going to kill me.
LAWYER: What makes you think that?
POLE: I got proof.
LAWYER: What kind of proof?
POLE: She going to poison me. She buy a bottle at the drug store and put on
shelf in bathroom. I can read - it says, "Polish Remover"

Killing Time In Office

You find it very boring in the office, here are some tips:

1. Form a detective agency to find out who is quitting next.
2. Make blank calls to your Boss.
3. Count your fingers (and toes if you still get bored).
4. Rearrange the furniture, i.e. flick someone elses chair just to irritate him/her.
5. Send mails from ms-mail to your internet mail (and immediately get to the internet and see who reaches first, you or your mail?) and read them there, and note down the time they take to reach there. Then do vice versa.
6. Watch other people changing their facial ex-pressions while working and try changing your ex-pressions also.
7. Try to stretch status meetings as longer as possible, just by asking silly doubts.
8. Have work breaks in between tea.
9. Have a two hour lunch; it's a big social occasion.
10. Read jokes and send jokes.
11. Revise last week's newspaper.
12. Hold "How fast my computer boots" competitions.
13. Practice aiming the coffee cup into the dustbin.
14. Compile "How to waste your day"
15. Pick up phone and dial non existing nos.
16. Make faces at strangers in office.
17. Count maximum no of applications your computer can open at a time.
18. For Win NT/95 users....Move things to Recycle bin and restore them..Then repeat this process.
19. Look at someone & try to imagine how(s) he might have looked when(s) he was 5 years old.
20. Learn to whistle.
21. Make full use of the comfortable chair and table provided and take a nap.
And if you are still getting bored-
22. Fwd this link to everyone u know.

Sun Microsystems Announces J2EE 1.4 Application Verification Kit

Sun Microsystems has announced the availability of a free J2EE 1.4 Application Verification Kit (AVK). The new J2EE AVK tests for portability and the correct use of J2EE APIs across J2EE technology-compatible application servers, helping to deliver assurance to customers that their solutions remain portable across the multi-vendor J2EE technology-based application server environment. The kit is available at http://java.sun.com/j2ee/avk/.

The J2EE 1.4 AVK provides a complete testing solution for this problem, comprising the following functionality:

  • Web services testing such as static checking for Web services endpoints and dynamic checking for both Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) and Servlet-based Web services;
  • Source code scanning for incompatible proprietary APIs that would cause interoperability challenges;
  • Incorporation of ANT (an open source program from the Apache Software Foundation for efficiently assembling all the pieces of a program) tasks in the development cycle;
  • Mapping assertions tested to the specification, enabling easy lookup; and
  • Component libraries.

Vote for Naidu? If we do, one by one, he will make this entire village drink pesticide.

If Mr Chandrababu Naidu loses Andhra Pradesh this time and if he decides to find out why, he should take this journey: turn right from the National Highway after Anantapur town and travel 9 km through a landscape dotted with the desert’s acacia and, occasionally, the light-coloured stubble of a dead crop.

Here lived Nagamani Reddy, the rock of the village. He was a six-foot-tall, well-built man who everyone in the village turned to in times of trouble.

At home, when it came to the crunch, he told his wife to cut down on meals rather than stop his three children from going to school. He lifted earth from 6 am to 10 pm to make sure his son got a chance to join the Army and his daughter could become a teacher.

On February 19, Rs 2.2 lakh in debt, Nagi Reddy killed himself by drinking pesticide.

The entire village and people from neighbouring villages came to mourn. Before the villages surrounding his became known as the ‘‘suicide vilages,’’ he was the first farmer in Kurugunta to take his life. Here’s why:

Five years ago, he took a loan from the bank and planted his four acres with groundnut. No rains, and the crop failed.

Next year, a loan from the village moneylender Rajshekhar Reddy. No rains, crop failed. Another year of loans, no rains.

Next year (2002), same story.

No canals, even the water in the wells had dried. No loan-waivers, no special drives to reach out to the farmer.

In India’s new millennium, the Naidu vision has not touched Kurugunta; he let the village continue with its age-old gamble with nature. And the farmers have lost.

None of his showpiece schemes, Janmabhoomi (development with community participation), Food for Work scheme (for drought-hit agricultural labour), Women’s self-help groups (micro-credit for women), are visible here. Nothing to lift these people from their fifth season of despair.

Scroll down Naidu’s Vision 2020, showpieced on his website, and it treats agricuture as low priority. The drip irrigation system on his laptop needs years to show any results. The only way Naidu has reached these farmers is through the mandal’s office.

The government clerks have efficiently fed the statistic of Reddy’s suicide into their data bank. They update forms on every household every month. ‘‘There was no money in the house for our children’s school fees,’’ says his composed and dignified widow, Laxmi Devi, 45. ‘‘He would not compromise on their studies; he told me to cook only one meal a day (chilli chutney and rice) but make sure the children go and study.’’

In this chilli-growing region, the food is hot. Chillis fill an empty stomach fast.

Their son, Jagamohan, 20, is a serious young man blessed with a great build. In 2003, apart from the failed crop, the father also took loans to send him to the Army Selection Board and trials in Bangalore, Guntur, Ooty and Hyderabad. Each trip cost at least Rs 1,000. No luck.

And then, Jagamohan’s appendix burst. The poison in his body and a botched operation put the family another Rs 20,000 in debt.

After the polls, there’s no money for him to go for a police physical test to Hyderabad.

The father’s second dream was to see his daughter G Dhanalaxmi (19) do a Master’s in Telugu Literature and become a teacher. ‘‘There is no money to pay my college fees of Rs 2,000,’’ she says. It’s a combined college fees that she has to pay next year.

She is still in her teens and very, very bitter. ‘‘The government has done nothing. I want to ask Naidu, people are dying, what are you doing?’’

The moneylenders had been bothering Reddy for a week. He had sold his cattle and tried to sell his land—thrice. Who will buy into the land of dry? He had started doing coolie work at Anantapur. ‘‘He was in a bad mood. He kept on saying, how do I live, I have so many loans?’’ recalls his brother Sanjiv Reddy, 46.

He died in town on Shivratri. His brother’s suicide has entered the village’s psyche. After the strongest among them caved in, they talk of suicide as if it’s like getting up and walking out of the room. And the cause could be a fight with a wife, or an ache in the stomach that does not go away. Everybody is sapped.

The only emotion they readily feel is rage.

Near the dry well, a crowd gathers. ‘‘Vote for Naidu? If we do, one by one, he will make this entire village drink pesticide.
Source: One reason Naidu may lose: dead farmer Nagi Reddy

I really want to see Naidu coming to power again. He is the reason. He is the person who got enthusiasm and guts to do the things. In the last 9 years he did really wonders to build a strong base for the top of the pyramid population, which has helped in giving a momentum to the eonomy in Andhra Pradesh as well as India. He has been instrumental in bringing IT revolution in India.

Now that top of the pyramid is well established and can stand on its own, there is a need for a visionary leader to make the bottom of the pyramid population(ordinary citizens/common man) flourish. Chandrababu Naidu is one person who can take up the challenge and take the things forward.

I wish he comes to power again and realizes this need, and use his second life (as he calls it after an assasination attempt at Tirupathi) for creating ground breaking rules/concepts to lift the bottom of the pyramid.

That is , to use pigeons to send messages.

One day Santa sends his pigeon. When the pigeon reaches to Banta it is without a message.

Banta picked his mobile and asked Santa "What is this? The pigeon is without message "

Then Santa says "Oye khotey .......................this was a missed call ".

Today I was watching Mahabharat battle series. In one scenario, aacharya Drone says this words after the death of Abhimanyu.

DEATH IS THE ULTIMATE OF HUMAN LIFE
BOTH BRAVE MEN AND COWARDS DIE
ITS YOUR CHOICE WHO YOU WANT TO BE!

Virender Shewag Married

Cricket Sensation Virender Sehwag to Married to Arti Singh.
Congratulations Veeru on your Wedding

sehwag_couple.JPG
The day after his wedding, the Prince of Najafgarh couldn't stop smiling. And this smile certainly wasn't only for the teeming cameramen waiting to capture him in their lens. It was the aura of matrimony which was evident.

Virender Sehwag looked resplendent in a black bandh gala when he walked in with his wife, Aarti, moments before he was going in for his reception when Timesofindia.com caught up with him.

The reception, hosted by Latika Khaneja, who is also the director of Collage Sports Management, which manages endorsements for Sehwag, was held at Maurya Sheraton in New Delhi. Massive security arrangements were made to control the media, gate crashers and fans who had already lined up since early evening to catch a glimpse of their hero, who brought home the Man of the Series award from the India-Pakistan series.

When asked what was it about Aarti that he liked most, the shy and humble Sehwag said, "Everything about her is very nice." And to the same question Aarti said, "He is a very humble and down to earth person and this is what I like most about Virender. I really love him"

Sehwag returned the compliment: “Ours is a love marriage. I am very happy that I have married the woman I love.”

Aarti was dressed in a crimson red lehanga fwith matching Kundan jewellery. Viru's outfit was designed by Geisha, who also designed his outfits for a suiting commercial.

Pleasant Trip To Houston

Yesterday evening I drove to houston. It was about 4 1/2 hours journey, I started arround 6:00PM in the evening. The drive was really really good, as it is spring the whole nature is very vibrant, with lush green trees,/fields and all trees/plants blooming with various colored flowers. It looked as if the whole earth is having some kind of festival and decorated with flowers of various colors. Reahed Manju's place at 10:30 OM and did some coding at Manju's place until late in the night arround 2:30 AM.

Today went to houstons Meenakshi temple. Its about 30 miles from Manju's place. It stared raining heavily while we started, but in the temple area there was no rain, which is kind of good. Once I saw the temple, it felt really really really good, its relative old temple and looks like a typical south indian temple, will post pics soon. I used my new camera phone to take pics. It's a really cool camera phone.

In the temple I had some real pleasant experience. Once I entered a georgeous telugu girl came straight before me, well she is actually making circles arround the temple, kind of making 108 rounds, which is kind of surprising to find somebody young like that in America. I started going arround temple and visited ganesh first and found that Kumaraswamy, brother of Ganesh is also sitting just beside him, i saw something like that for the first time.

After making a round, I entered main temple and the priest at temple came directly to me and asked me to help him carry apple box from the freezer to Devi Ma. I was surprised at this sudden happenning and actually felt as if Devi Ma is directly inviting me into her residense. What an honor, right ? And after offerring prayers to Devi Ma I was about to leave and one more person came to me and asked me to help him carry another apple box to the another Ganesh temple that is behind the Devi Ma's temple. Gosh, god after god inviting me into their residense. After visiting Ganesh, went to Canteen and ate Pontal and Curd rice and back home. It was realy nice feeling serving god, may be I am indebted to the Houston temple.

More about the trip dayafter...........

WebonSwing Framework

WebOnSwing is the easiest way to create web pages and sites, you can render html pages with Swing components, using html templates to separate perfectly look&feel and logic.

You can map your Swing based applications to html web pages, using exactly the same source code for both contexts. Also you can use the provided new layout managers to make your web pages look professional.

This web application framework constructs and handles html pages with Swing components, allowing to use MVC architecture and all the facilities provided by Swing in the Web.

In addition it provides a template system that allows to totally separate the view from logic and easily interchange the different views without touching absolutely nothing of code, facilitating the interaction of the designer and the developer, the use of skins, etc.

The development process is much simpler, first Swing windows are implemented which interacts with the business logic and model; and once its behavior is proven we have to specialize the view for web. This process includes, among other things, the use of html templates, the persistence of data through successive requests (in session or keeping the state within the page), the development of renderers for new components (if it is necessary), and can be added custom javascript so that it handles client side events, associating them to server Swing events, handling of styles, etc.

It has a window manager that allows the use of modal windows transparently, allowing in addition to keep the stack of windows and each one state within the html page, to be able to reconstruct navigation completely, with no need to maintain any data in the server session.

Another interesting feature is the capacity to refresh components, that allows to update single parts of the page which have changed from last request, remarkably lowering to the traffic of the sucesive requirements, increasing the speed of page responses. And in addition using the automatic refreshment feature it is possible to simulate the behavior of a desktop application from web, obtaining the differences of the view by periodics polling from client side to server.

Muslim call to prayer creates furore in US town

The elders of a Bangladeshi mosque have sparked controversy in the Detroit suburb of Hamtramck by requesting official permission to broadcast the daily call to prayer over loudspeakers.

The proposition has drawn passionate responses from some residents of Hamtramck __ a once Polish enclave in the state of Michigan that has recently welcomed waves of immigrants from Bosnia, Pakistan, Yemen and Bangladesh.

The simmering controversy boiled over late on Tuesday when the members of Hamtramck City Council gathered to consider an amendment to the town's noise ordinance that would authorise the five-times daily Islamic chant.

"I object to the content of the Arabic call to prayer ... It says Allah is the only God," said Hamtramck native Bob Golen. "A US citizen should not be subjected to the tenets of someone else's religion."

Abdul Alguzali, a Hamtramck businessman, said he and other Muslims "are citizens of this country, too." When Alguzali recited the call to prayer in Arabic, some in the crowd shouted "talk American" and "speak English."

But some in Hamtramck, a town of 23,000 that is completely encompassed by the gritty sprawl of Detroit, say the noise is not the point: a call to prayer is a call to a different God.

Mary Urbanski, a lifelong resident of Hamtramck, said the United States was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and that church "bells are music." The chant, she said during Tuesday's council meeting, "is not just a call to prayer ... and I don't want to hear it five times a day."

A Muslim physician walked out of the hearing shaking his head and said, "I never knew they hated us so much." Another Muslim, Gabriel Alaziz, said he was "blown away by the level of intolerance I see here.

Well, in India you wake up with all kinds of noise sorry hymns from temples/ call for prayer from mosques/ church bells and what not.

Very interesting, especially when you think most Muslims would be so afraid during these uncertain times, and these people in Detroit are actually looking to expand their liberties. As I began reading I did sympathize with those who believed the call to prayer would be an imposition of someone else's religion, but when that lady mentioned the bells of christian churches then it hit me, isn't that the same? Definately. I say they get rid of both the bells and the calls to prayer, it's more ecologically sound.

I don't know if boradcasting 'Call to Parayer'/'Church Bells'/'Hindu Prayers'/...... in loud speakers or something like that will impose religion or not. Religion is a personal thing and one should have the liberty to choose one, well I don't want to get into this arguement. But that will certainly cause NOISE POLLUTION.

What is this crap about calling to a different God?
Need we remember that Islam was built on the foundation of Judaism and Christianity. Just because muslims refer to "God" as "Allah," doesnt make Allah some other entity. The Jews have had many terms for "God", and even gone to the extent of not even giving God a name. But it doesnt make "their God" any different from the Christian and Muslim God.
People..WE WORSHIP THE SAME GOD!!!!!
A call to prayer is just that..a call to prayer. Not a call to Islam or to a beleif. Muslim or non Muslim, you may chose to ignore the call.
The ahdan is also a form of art just as the bells are. Even if u cant understand what is being said, the sound and melody are wonderful.
Also, if one does not know arabic, how the hell can one be persuaded into the beleifs of Islam?

Anyways...we have a looong way to go as humans in understanding each other.

There are 2 issues here.

1/ The call to prayer is offensive to Christians because it claims "Mohammed is the prophet of God"
and is therefore 'evangelistic' and confronting in nature.

2/ Cultural intrusion.
The founding fathers did establish the Judao Christian underpinning of the country. The obvious reaction which Muslims may not have considered is this
"If this is how they act when they have the technicalities of the law on their side, its better not to have them here at all" which of course is the kind of reaction which would arise in Bangladesh if suddenly a group of Christian expatriates wished to establish a Church in a town next to a mosque and its 'steeple' was a few feet higher than that of the Minaret. The height issue would probably not arise, as the church would have been burnt down by the zealous 'saracens' so to speak.
