My Crucible Experiences - 1

Inspired by Rajesh Jain's new series of articles: Crucible Experiences

Before Proceeding read the following
#1 Crucible Experiences: Life’s Tests
#2 Crucible Experiences: Leaders Learn
#3 Crucible Experiences: Four Types

Ok now after you read them you are all set to read my crucible experiences. I have lots of crucible experiences through out my life that happened to come due to various situations that I forced myself into voluntarily or I was forced into involuntarily. Until now I had a very very fluid life which kind of vascilated among extreme experiences and behaviours which feels like north south poles. But one thing is sure, everything I accomplished came the real hard way.

I would say my crucibles started immediately after I was sent to borading in 1988 @ Guntur, then next boarding @ APRJC where I got first exposure to real society filled with hatred, discrimination, hope, opportunity, etc. then next boarding @ JNTU, Anantapur, throwed some mind blowing challenges before me and brought out the vibrant leader in me, lifes experiences that my dad made me go through helped me to believe in hard work, the dream of breaking into mystical new world of urban culture ended up as a miserable failure, rejuvenation with the help of DILT made me embark on ambitious future journey, experiences/accomplishments in strange new land Singapore set me on the road towards a hopeful future, horrible pressure that I have to go through in USA in 2001 and 2002 during the deep recision time brought out the fighter in me, accidental acquiantance with Rajesh Jains blog revolutinalized my thinking process and currently set me the new odysseys.

I want to publish the crucibles that I went through in a series of posts. So today lets start with my first crucible as a boarding student.

I was joined into boarding school @ Ravi College, Guntur. My parents wanted me to get a better education, so that I can scale heights in my career. There were lots of expectations from me, this expectation thing was always there from my childhood, I was suppossed to be class 1st and anything less than that is not acceptable. So, i was all set for that at this school, but something else was also there to be experienced here. Suddenly I am required to be on my own and there was absolute freedom. I started perceiving this freedom with a month of joining the boarding, one day i was sleeping and a friend of mine came and woke me up and asked me if I am interested in joining them for a movie, which they are going in the nights without permission. First I was terrified and refused to go telling them that its a bad thing to do , but I could not refuse next day, I went along with them and the first movie was Bobby, hindi movie in which I throughly slept as I don't understand a single word. But this is just the begining of experiencing the joy of flying with wings of freedom and believe me in the two years time that I stayed there, I ended up watching almost 500 movies and more than 99% of them are watched stealthly.

As this exploration of freedom was going on, something interesting started going on with my studies, I alwyas started standing first in the class for a reason. There they had a policy of who ever comes first in the class in the monthly exams they will be the class leader for the next month. I was the class leader during the whole 9th and 10th classes, except for the first month in 10th class where I had competition from a new guy who joined, but he got that chance only for one month, he was crushed after that by both brains and brawns. Well there is actually a reason why I was always class first, its not b'cos I love studying, but b'cos class leader has the power of collecting fines from students for various reasons. So, I used to fine students and the fines were usually very very high used to run upto a hundred rupees sometimes. Then I used to lobby with the students to fund my movie addiction and they could get some concession from my side in the amount of fine they have to pay or sometimes the issue of fine completely gets unreported. Thus I emerged as a perfect leader in the eyes of the students as they feel that I favor them with less fines and also by helping them in cheating in exams as I used to be upto date with all my subjects. You the power of money and leadership right, I never wanted to give that up and ended up being class first all the time. Note: Personally I myself never cheated in exams.

One more thing that has a huge impact on me was, once when I got fined for Rs.300/- for breaking a glass window, some students who got my favors contributed to pay that fine, what a deal right.

This boarding experience is my first major crucible, where I started experiencing the wings of freedom, power of leadership, power of controlling the things, indulging in myslef, perceiving the fighter and strategist in me to accomplish the things I want.

Next: Boarding @ APRJC

Take Your True Self to Work Day Today

Via: Sadagopan's weblog on Emerging Thoughts, Technologies, Ideas, Trends

Compartmentalizing your life can be more than unproductive -- it can be unhealthy. Consider bringing your whole self to your work and move beyond work-life balance. When I go to work, it's as if I leave my true self locked in the car. I go up in the elevator and emerge as Work Self. If I leave in time, I can get back to the car and reclaim my true self. But if I'm too late, by the time I get there, my true self is just out cold." That's how a salesman I hired described his life in corporate America. He had to be two different people. Work didn't want his true self, but he fought hard to keep it alive. Sometimes he succeeded, sometimes he didn't. A person compartmentalising life, has a work self and what he thinks of as his true self, carefully locked away from each other. This kind of compartmentalization is sometimes called splitting by psychologists, and it has a bad reputation. Once you split off a part of yourself, what's left rules without checks or balances. It can come as no real surprise that when one investigates the lives of many criminals -- white-collar criminals and war criminals alike -- the integration of their work and home lives is strikingly absent. The problem with compartmentalization, it turns out, is that it offers its proponents the opportunity to lie. It helps good people to do bad things.compartmentalization is a characteristic, even a requirement, of so many corporate cultures. What else are corporate fetishes like 24-hour deal negotiations, all-night coding, and corporate retreats if not training for leaving your real self at home? Punishing schedules, endless travel, and repeated relocations are designed to teach you tolerance for leaving your private values in the car. In cultures like these, it can come as no surprise when executives lose their sense of right and wrong; they were trained to lock it away long ago.If we take our whole selves to work, we can transform the culture and sustain ourselves. Think about this the next time you go to the work. When you leave your home or lock and park your car, what are you leaving behind? Take your whole self to work tomorrow and watch what happens.

Well, I don't see any ambitious plans like another green revolution initiative, interlinking rivers for optimization of water resources etc. This is needed so that the fruits reach the masses who voted the govt. in.

Try This

While sitting at your desk,
lift your right foot off the floor
and make clockwise circles.

Now, while doing this,
draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.
Your foot will change direction and there's nothing you can do about it.

Elango - Hero who transformed Panchayat

In a nation where collective finger pointing at politicians, grieving at the slowness of democracy and deriding India itself are fashionable, Rangaswamy Elango is an object lesson. He is an engineer for whom the outer world lay open. He chose to return to his village. He was born a Dalit, a people who have many justified grievances with Indian society. He chose to harmonise passions. He had choices enough to stay away from the rough and tumble of politics, as most educated Indians are wont to. He chose it as the means to lead his village, Kuthambakkam to prosperity. He can spend his life basking in the successes he has wrought so far in Kuthambakkam. But he has chosen to evangelise village centred development. He is a family man with longings for his loved ones. But he lives a solitary life for his cause, Gram Swaraj [--the Autonomous Village]. Most of all, at a time when it is the vogue to belittle Gandhi, he adores the great man as the one who truly understood India. The career path of Rangaswamy Elango needs to be widely known. Just fifty more Panchayat leaders like him across India are enough as nodes from where sensible village development can radiate in all directions.

Read the whole fascinating phenomenon @Elango at Kuthambakkam is implementing Gandhi's manifesto.

I should make a point to keep Elango in mind visit his village while I embark on the bandwagon of Politics.

Elango is optimistic for India. What does he think of the recent attempts to nibble away Panchayat's powers? "Look, the system will come up with the necessary resistance," he says. "In Tamil Nadu alone I have personally identified 1000 honest, successful Presidents. We have begun to network and stay connected. This number will only increase. I am sure similar is the case in other States. I am starting a Panchayat Academy to teach the Presidents their powers and villages' entitlement. All these will rouse people's expectations. There is an emerging force not visible to the media and most people. It is at work changing India from below. This force cannot be stemmed."

Its wonderful that a network of honest people is forming, I guess every effort should be made to expand this network and exploit the potential of such a network to build a prosperous india.

Do You want to be the next Google millionaire?

Call it Googlemania. Seems like it's impossible these days to read the financial section of a newspaper or magazine or surf the Net without getting a dose of speculation about Google's supposedly imminent public offering.

In fact, if you "Google" Google IPO, you'll get upwards of 253,000 hits. There's even one Web site -- Google IPO Central -- devoted solely to news (and I use the word loosely) about the upcoming IPO

And the hyperbole: It's the most important IPO in history! It's going to revitalize the tech market! It's going to rejuvenate the stock market! It's going to re-cast the landscape of American presidential politics! (Okay, I made up that last one, but you get the idea.)

How Can I Get in?

The answer to the first question depends on how Google pulls off the offering.

Traditionally, investment bankers set an offering price for IPO shares and then allocate them to brokerage firms, which in turn dole them out to their best customers. In the past, some of these shares have also been given to heads of large companies as -- choose your word: incentives, bribes, kickbacks -- for the implicit promise of future business.

Under this system, the people who get shares at the offering price often make a big killing because IPOs, especially eagerly awaited ones, frequently go for much more than the offering price (initially at least) once trading begins.

The rub for small investors is that they rarely get shares at the offering price -- they buy at the higher market price, providing a profit to the big shots.

There's also a rub for the companies going public -- money that might have gone to the company has effectively been transferred to lucky people who got the IPO at what amounts to a below-market IPO offering price.

There has been talk that Google may forego this traditional IPO route in favor of a Dutch auction. In this rare system, the investment bank offers shares at a very high price and continuously lowers it, taking bids at various prices along the way.

All bidders end up paying the price at which the last shares are sold.

So, for example, if the first few bidders agreed to a prices ranging between, say, $20 and $18 per share, but the bid for the final shares came in at, say, $15, everyone would pay $15.

So why not just wait until the price drops to a very low level? Simple. If you wait too long, the shares may sell out and you're left with nothing.

I think this method has the possibility of opening up the process to more investors. Of course, Google hasn't consulted me on this, so I have no idea whether the company will go the Dutch auction or traditional route.

Hitmen look for jobs; join call centres

1. Name: Roshan Singh, 29 years.

Profession: Call-centre employee.

In the cut-throat world of call-centre jobs, only the toughest survive. Like Roshan Singh. He thinks on his feet, is alert, and his attention to detail has earned him praise from his superiors.

Four years ago: Roshan Singh was in the top rung of the Chhota Rajan gang, reporting to mafia members like Sunil Madgaonkar, alias Matya. He was part of the squad that killed two businessmen in the western suburbs and unsuccessfully fired on a businessman in Bandra.

2. Name: Santosh Shinde, 31 years.

Profession: Runs a Chinese fast-food stall.

He wields the wok with alacrity. Just the right dash of soya, a sprinkling of chillies and a pinch of ajinomoto and the noodles are ready to be served, hot and savoury.

Seven years ago: Santosh Shinde used to take orders from Arun Gawli’s top aide, Sada Pawle. Pawle taught him the ropes of the trade — handling a gun, pulling the trigger, stalking the quarry. As a part of Pawle’s core team, he’d extort money and deliver it to wherever Pawle was holed up.

Pawle found him sincere and was grooming him to be a hit man.

3. Name: Usman Khan, 33 years

Profession: Salesman

If you walk into Manish Market and stumble onto Khan in his tiny, nondescript stall, you are more likely than not, to come back impressed with his sales pitch. That’s because you will return with things you didn’t intend to buy.

Eight years ago: Usman Khan was part of the Feroze Kokani gang. Kokani was Chotta Shakeel’s top gunman. Khan participated in at least three murders with Konkani.

To this list, add a steward in a five-star hotel in Bandra, who till a while ago was a contract killer.

Well, this is kind of good thing happenning, but will this have any adverse affect on the BPO market, where there is foul cry about the privacy issues (I am referring only to call center employed hitman).
