GMAT Preparation

After a lot of contemplating I have decided to give a serious attempt on GMAT and give my best to get into best business school. I came across this cool website http://www.gmatclub.com which has got loads of information on how to prepare for GMAT. I have always loved following/participating in discussion groups while preparing for tests. I have benefited a lot for my java exams from http://www.javaranch.com/ forums which are instrumental in helping me acquiring vast knowledge and a real nice score. I am gonna depend on GMAT Club for my GMAT preparation. Wish me luck and pray for my admission into Wharton.

Anil Ambani is the lady killer politician

Source: whispersinthecorridors

Ladies, beware ! Forget Shahrukh, Salman and Hrithik who impress many a women - both married and unmarried - on the celluloid alone. Here comes lady killer, this time, from among the politicians. Guess who, he is a business tycoon too ! Yes, he is none other than the one, and the only one, Anil Ambani.
This fact has come to light following a survey put up on the portal whispersinthecorridors.com in its News and Views section. The portal quite popular among the country's decision makers - be they the politicians or the bureaucrats - is known for its alacrity when it comes to transmitting the news about the `powers that be'.
Even its Editor, Dr. Suresh Mehrotra, had while posting the question never imagined that response for Ambani would be so overwhelming. "I had never thought that Ambani would outnumber others that too by such a huge margin" says Mehrotra.
The respondents were asked to post their choice from among the 12 young faces in politics viz. Rahul Gandhi, Sandeep Dixit, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Anil Ambani, Arun Jaitley, Varun Gandhi, Sachin Pilot, Dayanidhi Maran, Dushyant Singh, Manvendra Singh, Milind Deora and Omar Abdullah.
And the respondents, over 1000, intruiguingly enough, fell for the suave and soft Anil Ambani leaving all the Baba Logs (youngsters) far behind. The response in favour of Ambani, believe it, was a whopping 90 per cent leaving the so called charming ones like Gandhis and Scindia far behind, though the reasons behind falling for Ambani were different.
While some favoured him as a potential ladykiller politician because they thought that he is smart, others were impressed by his perfection. Some voted for him simply because of his wealth. They think that the one who is wealthy has all the qualities in itself. Take for instance a comment saying, "jiske hath main paisa, uske haath mein waise hi satta (power)". Karlo usko mutthi main aur sirf usme hai woh baat were the compliments for Ambani who has been considered an all round performer and who would not love to like the one who is apt at performing - whatever the place may be.
While over 90 per cent respondents favoured Ambani, the remaining 11 poor chaps finished off within 10 per cent with Rahul Gandhi bagging favour of about three per cent respondents and his cousin Varun Gandhi only Two per cent.
Of course, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Omar Abdullah were also seen as a lady killer politician but by only a handful of respondents. The others in the competition also garnered some votes for themselves but they could be counted on fingers.

This is my recent email mailed to RELIANCE CUSTOMER SERVICE CELL. I will post the reply and keep Reliance customers updated. Other customers having greviances with reliance and would like to raise a voice please get in touch with me on jyotindra98@hotmail.com or my cell 09892498193.

Dear Neeraj,

I have purchased a Reliance Data Card (MDN: 093245xxxxx, RSN: RZTCDC000xxxxx), I submitted all the proper documents and there was a verification of my address and identity too. The data card worked properly for two weeks and now its giving me a 691 error when I try to connect. When I contact reliance customer support they asked me to visit the nearest reliance web world. I visited reliance web world in vashi twice but was did not get any response was asked to speak with some one called Daniel. Daniel in turn told me that he cannot help me and I have to visit reliance web world again.

My concerns are:

1.) I was charged Rs 500 extra, above mrp by reliance communications, Sector 5, Airoli. This was a blackmail, because I had paid 1800 advance for a FWP he demanded Rs 500 more, when I planed to shift to data card instead, and also showed me receipts that he has been charging Rs 5500 for the card from several other customers that is above MRP.
2.) The local reliance communication, lakshya communications Sector 5 airoli, is non-responsive, give wrong information, faulty products and cause customers discomfort through whatever privileges they enjoy with reliance.
3.) I have been given wrong information that I have crossed credit limit, which is not possible because I wanted to subscribe to 650, 1 gb plan, if I am subscribed wrongly its not my fault.
4.) I want my connection to started immediately; other wise please give me a full refund of my Rs 5500. If I do not get my connection or the money I have paid, I will be forced to issue a charge back on my credit card, and also go in media and court of law.

I have also purchased a reliance prepaid connection no: 93222XXXXX, which is deactivated for a more than a week.

I would request you to take this issue seriously. Anticipating an encouraging and positive reply.

Dear Sir,

I hope you find this mail in all your good health. I am Ramendra Singh working with Infosys Technologies as a Programmer Analyst. I have a strong belief in Reliance ADA group as a good service provider, but I feel really very sorry to tell you that now you are degrading yourself by harassment of Customer like me. You can go through the incident that has happened with me in the mail attached and really shocking is no revert from all the people whom I marked this mail. Dear sir to get your data card I enclosed all the documents with the CAF at a very initial stage

1. Bank Statement (Address Proof)

2. PAN Card

3. License

4. Infosys Technologies ID Card

5. HR Letter from Infosys Technologies

After 15 Days your verification Deptt has discontinued my services with a note Negative Address Verification. I felt really shocked to see the people like Mr. Rahul B Pawar who is looking after verification for Pune as he termed it as negative due to the reason I am residing there with my fellow Infoscions, he has sent a person at my residence and I signed on the papers he provided. Now again after 15 days I have to wait for that fellow and sign those papers. In addition to this that verification person never come on time, in day time I am in office so that can not attend him I requested them to send him either before 9 am or after 7pm but he everytime comes in the day time.

Sir, apart from this there is no revert from any of the person to whom I marked this mail. One more point I would like to bring in your notice is that one of my room mate is already using this facility from Reliance and that is even with lesser documents than me. Apart from this I tried the number of Sudha Vutukuru -02030331824 around 20 times but she never picked up phone and if picked disconnect it, Please try this number yourself I don’t know why these people are working in customer service deptt.

Sir, I request you to take necessary step against the people involved in this so that in the near future no body should feel harassed by you customer service deptt.

Further I appreciate the efforts put by Mr Rajinder one of the person working with Hindustan Commnication Reliance Web Express at Bavdhan Pune unit who has taken more than extra efforts to get it activated but all in vain. Due to our own Mr Pawar.

Subject: ****************Service issue with ZTE Card -9372442490**********************

Dear Team

This is regarding the Reliance ZTE Data Card linked to the Rel No 9372442490. I am writing this mail after a lot of harassment from Reliance Web Express at Bavdhan, you customer service center *333 and Verification Deptt. I have taken this Data Card at around 15-20 days back after completing all the documents which include Bank Statement (Address Proof), HR Letter from Infosys , My Infosys ID Card, PAN Card, License. A person from verification Deptt has visited my place that I provided for the verification, I signed the document he has provided me. After completing all these formalities my card got activated after 3days whereas assurance of 1 day was given for the same. I tolerate this much delay as it can be due to the process of verification. But after completing all this formalities and patience my card got activated and I was using it till 26-09-2006 9.00 pm. But at sudden you discontinued the services for the card without any prior notification I was shocked to see that.

After this much patience my card got activated and now you again deactivated it when I called at your service centre at 10.00 pm on 26-09-2006 Mr Hari picked up the call and the tone in which he spoke to me was totally intolerable and not justifiable. He told me that your address verification is NEGATIVE. I felt shocked to hear that and he has added fury to my anger with his arrogant voice and than I asked him to transfer the call to His manager than I had a word with Sharmila She told me that your address verification is negative and you have to visit our WEBWORLD to get it verified I don’t know what all has happened there are so many friends of mine who are using the same connection from the same address and even with the lesser documents that I had given . I don’t know why you people are making me feel harass. I am working in Infosys and already provide all the relevant documents asked from me. Now I don’t feel that I would love and recommend any body to go for reliance. You have lost a loyal customer and I am not a fraudulent if you want you can come and confirm it at my address any time. I don’t know now when I will get time to go to WEBWORLD once your executive has visited and I had given all the documents you tell me where I was wrong.

I request you all to activate my connection ASAP. Otherwise I left with no other option instead to go for surrender of this card.

Regards

Ramendra Singh

HI

Stop making customer run from one service centre to other service centre.

If really your company wants to help customer and your service centre know that what is problem in my LG handset then why you dont arrange MAIN BOARD in the same service centre where my LG handset is lying.

Why you are making customer to run from one service centre to other.

To Whomsoever it may concern.Due to Non Availbility of Right Person's Email Address/ Phone Number, I am forced to send this email to you all.I beg your excuse for the same and request you to please forward this email to the Right Person.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am a Postpaid customer of Reliance since April 2005 on number 0141-3266325 and please view my Payment Record to see my punctuality with Reliance.

Now , my concern is, my Phone LSI-110 stopped working properly on 18th December 2006. I use this Phone in my office, so it was urgent to get it repaired. I visited Reliance Webworld, C-59, Gurunank Pura, Raja Park, Jaipur on same day and I was told to visit "Kamakshi Telecom, C-scheme, Jaipur. I visited there on 19th December 2006 and I was suggested to change the handset, instead of repairing it, and I was guided to Reliance World, OM Tower Opp. Amrapura MI Road Jaipur Rajasthan - 302001

I visited there on 20th December 2006 and I was given an option to pay Rs 1250 and exchange this set with a used one ( not a new unit) , andn when I instited on a new unit, I was told that New Units were not avilable in Stock and on my Question - when will I get the New Unit, I was told rudely "To say something is about this is Impossible".

Now I visited Reliance World ( hereafter wherever I mention "Reliance World" please consider it as Reliance World- OM Tower Opp. Amrapura MI Road Jaipur Rajasthan - 302001 ) on 28th December 2006 and after waiting in que for naerly 45 minutes the reply was again the same, Not in Stock.

I again waited for next few days and visited Reliance World on 16th Jan 2007, waited in que for 32 mins approx and got a chance to speak with Mr Pawan, He again gave the same reply and when I complained about it, He told me to stand out of the que rudely and let another customer come to him, I thought I would get a respose so waited for next 15 mins and again when I asked him if he could give me a tentitive date when shall I come back, his reply was- "Why do not you take an old one." RUDELY. When I insisted on my question- I was made to meet someone (I did not get his name, but a male person) and he gave me the same reply, I asked him to give it to me in Written that they did not have new phones in stock, he refused.I was made to meet Mr Gaurav there and he introduced himself as Reliance World Manager. I explained him my problem that I did not wish to go for an old handset and if he could give me a tentitive date for the new handset arrival as I was not ready to leave from Reliance World this time without a written assurance, He became ready to offer me a New Handset at Rs 1250 this time. Now My first Question is - Where from this New Handset came in stock so early?

Meanwhile, some third person told me that I need not to Pay Rs 1250 for it and I can my handset exchanged through a Net Complaint so I made a complaint on same day and my complaint Number or Case ID is - 43735911, Now I was given a form to fill up ( A copy of which is scanned and attached) and was told to come on Tuesday i.e. 19th Jan 2007.

Today, on 19th Jan 2007 when I visited Reliance World, I was again forced to take old Phone / used Phone , and not a New Unit, and the reply was again Same "Not in Stock" I reached there at 3:30 pm and was made to wait till 4:25 for this response as all the customer care executives were busy at Lunch except one. And then when I insisted to meet Mr Gaurav, I was again told to wait. I waited for 15 mins, when did not get a reply, I sent my Visiting Card to Mr. Gaurav, He came out of his cabin himself and told me if you need a new Phone, you need to Pay Rs 1250 and in FOC we can give you only old Phones. When I insisted to get the same reply in Written Mode, He told me that he was not the authorized person to give anything in written. He threw his visiting card back on me and told me this is what he could do the best for me. When I asked for his Visiting Card, He refused to give it and said he did not have any visiting Card. He told me all that he could do for me was that he could make a complaint about it and I was given a Complaint ID Number - 601273257, I was not even told or shown what complaint he has made on my behalf. I asked for sending this complaint on my email or to give me a paper print about it, I was refused and I was told not to waste his time, as he had other works to do. It was 5:35 when I left from there.

Now my questions are -

1.If I am ready to pay Rs 1250, they have a New Handset in Stock, but if I ask for it against FOC- Handsets are not in stock for last one month ?

2.A Manager at Reliance World does not have his Visiting Cards, How do I make sure that I am talking to a Right Person ?

3. The managers at Reliance World are so ill mannered that they do not know how to handle someone’s Visiting Card.

4. A Handset complaint can not be entertained in 30 Days period and the staff does not have any idea about new Stock.

5. A Manager at Reliance World has No time for customers, No authority to give anything on paper/ email, No Visitng Cards and still he is a Manager there.

6. There is No Value of a Customer’s Time and Mental Agony caused to him?

Well, I am really very disappointed with this attitude and feel insulted in front of many other Reliance Customers who were there . I have all the conversation with Mr Gaurav on 19th Jan 2007 recorded in my Cell Phone and an existing customer who was present there at that time which I can Produce if you require.

I shall wait for a quick response within 48 hours from the Management or else, I shall take the matter to consumer court for legal proceedings for all the Losses and Mental Agony and Time wasted.

Yesteday i sent this mail on:

serviceassurancecell@relianceada.com
ritu.thapar@relianceada.com

Lets see when do i get a response from them.

Dear Sir/Mam,

Warm Greetings,

Being a privileged customer of Reliance India Mobile & in general, we would like to thank you for providing such quality services.

We would like to bring to your kind notice that we have been using RIM services for almost three years now & have taken nine postpaid connections. We are highly satisfied with the services provided by you.

Recently we got the plan shifted for our seven RIM connections from NJ149 + RIM2RIM pack TO NJ199 + RIM2RIM pack from one of the web-world in Delhi (Rohini sec-9). We were of the view that NJ199 is a much better plan than NJ149 & it would enable us to save more. At the same time we were having RIM2RIM pack on all the connections which was a must as just because of this scheme we have bought nine connections for commercial use.

The change of plan was initiated on 26 Feb’2007. We received our first bill after the change of plan just few days ago.

Following are the few points to be noticed:

Our RIM2RIM pack has been changed. Earlier we were paying nothing for calls made to RIM, but now we have to pay 0.15p/min after 1000 calls to RIM.
(This feature was not mentioned by the customer care executive who on behalf of Reliance Communications changed our plan.)

The charges for calls made after 1000 minutes to RIM were chargeable at the rate of 0.15p/min, but the charges were mentioned in the bill even before 15 minutes are over.
(This is confirmed with the same web-world as wrong charges, & according to them Reliance Communications shall wave them off in the next bill.)

The above said complaint number is against the web-world on account of misleading us & not telling us the full details of the plan. Even the customer care at *333 doesn’t have an answer to what can be done to reverse the plan.

We the customers of Reliance Communications seek your guidance on the above said matter & want to get shifted to the same plan we were before. Following is the list of our seven numbers on which we changed our Talk plans:

S.no Number Current talk plan Earlier talk plan

1. 9312934692 NJ199+RIM2RIM NJ149+RIM2RIM

2. 9312934693 NJ199+RIM2RIM NJ149+RIM2RIM

3. 9312934694 NJ199+RIM2RIM NJ149+RIM2RIM

4. 9312934696 NJ199+RIM2RIM NJ149+RIM2RIM

5. 9312934697 NJ199+RIM2RIM NJ149+RIM2RIM

6. 9312934698 NJ199+RIM2RIM NJ149+RIM2RIM

7. 9312934699 NJ199+RIM2RIM NJ149+RIM2RIM

As according to the Chairman of Reliance Communications Mr. Anil Dhirubhai Ambani “I look forward to a sustainable & mutually rewarding relationship with you “, we would be grateful if you could continue with this mission of his & help us providing a solution to our query in a win-win situation Asap.

Thanks & Regards

He specializes in the subcellular structures responsible for energy metabolism: the mitochondria. Recently, Mootha and colleagues have isolated peptide fragments from these organelles and identified them with mass spectroscopy. By comparing the protein fingerprints with gene expression databases, more than 100 previously unknown mitochondrial proteins were identified. He used a similar, coordinated approach to identify the gene that causes Leigh Syndrome French Canadian variant, a fatal metabolic disease. In diseases resulting not from a single gene but the interaction of sets of genes, he introduced a computational method for identifying patterns of gene activity in specific diseases. In type 2 diabetes, for example, this method has identified aberrations in the regulation of genes related to a specific metabolic pathway, an observation that may provide important clues to the cause of a prevalent and devastating condition. As importantly, Mootha has pioneered powerful, adaptable computational strategies for mining data collected in laboratories throughout the world, providing an efficient means to hunt down gene interactions that lead to a wide variety of diseases.

Hitting Glass Ceiling - Confused

For the last more than a week, I am so confused, I am just sitting and wondering where I am going on my life. I just feel as if I am accomplishing lot of things and at the same time I just see lot of them evaporating before my eyes, I just feel trapped in my current job, doing the same things again and again. The stuff that I do out of work are not yielding any outstanding results and this is frustrating me a lot. I understand that everything that we do might not produce the result that we want, but I just started wondering if I am playing loosing game all the while. I am haiving a burned out sensation and I am feeling as if I am hitting the glass ceiling. But the whole issue is what do I want to do now? I started getting serious thoughts about joining MBA college and I want to get into the best college in the world, but I am not that intelligent to get in there, i suck in so many things. I don't know why I am so skeptical about getting an admission. I just keep coming up with various reasons all the while why I should not do it, I should really concentrate on the reasons why I need to get in there. Right now, I am struck at office with lots of work, need to get back to it, so will revisit this musings back.

Tested, Certified and Supported Open Source Systems

A new company which is focussing on delivering reliable open source systems has come up:SourceLabs

Open source is a tectonic shift, as significant as the Internet. Eventually it will affect everyone who works with software, including traditional vendors. But to date, beyond Linux, open source has not changed the way most organizations build software and run their businesses.

Why is this true, given the large number of strong open source projects and products available from around the world? We've found that many customers still expect pre-integrated systems that are tested, certified to meet performance requirements, and supported and maintained at the same level as proprietary systems.

At SourceLabs, our mission is to free customers from software lock-in, while providing the integration, dependability and support required for real world systems.

We call this new approach Dependable Open Source Systems, and it means that customers will never again have to choose between 'Dependable' and 'Open' when deciding what software to use.

To differentiate themselves, they have formulated six promises to their customers and the open source community.

  • We promise to not lock you in, ever
  • We promise to keep our company open
  • We promise to keep our egos separate from technology
  • We promise to provide only software that we've tested and certified
  • We promise to be accountable
  • We promise to make your software work

This is really a wonderful concept which will help the opensource industry big time.

Law is getting misued - Lets Scrap it, huh!

Source: Hello, Mr Terrorist, please come in by Prakash Singh. The writer is former director general of the BSF, ex-UP and Assam DGP.

The Government of India has approved ordinances to withdraw the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), 2002, and to amend the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. In doing so, the UPA has fulfilled its commitment to the Common Minimum Programme but the country has regressed in its commitment to fighting international terrorism.

Ironically, the Congress government had passed the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act or TADA in 1987, which gave stringent powers of search and seizure to the police. There were instances of the Act being misused for political purposes. The Supreme Court nevertheless upheld its constitutional validity in Kartar Singh vs State of Punjab (1994), considering that the country was in ‘‘the firm grip of spiralling terrorist violence’’ and ‘‘there were countless serious and horrendous events engulfing many cities with bloodbath, firing, looting, mad killing, even without sparing women and children, and reducing those areas into a graveyard’’.

TADA was eventually allowed to lapse in 1995. The Law Commission of India recommended in April 2000 the adoption of a law designed to deal firmly and effectively with terrorists and their activities. When the very existence of a liberal society is at stake, they opined, drastic measures meant to strengthen law enforcement and the maintenance of public order are a necessary evil. Meanwhile the country was witness to major terrorist incidents like hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight IC-814 to Kandahar in 1999 and the assault on Parliament on December 13, 2001. The Government was thus obliged to enact POTA.

This Act was also criticised on the ground that it gave extraordinary powers to law-enforcement agencies, which were misused. It was also argued that the existing laws of the land were adequate to deal with the problem of terrorism. If a law is to be scrapped because it is misused, then perhaps most of our laws will have to be dumped in the Indian Ocean. The proper approach in such cases is to punish those who misuse the law. And, it is sheer hypocrisy to say that the existing laws are adequate to deal with terrorism. M N Venkatachaliah, former chief justice of India, when asked whether POTA should be scrapped, said that what was necessary was regulation and not the scrapping of POTA.

The details of the proposed amendments to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, have not been made public except that the revised legislation would have a ‘‘milder’’ definition of terrorism, and that it will exclude provisions of POTA which placed the onus of proving innocence on the accused and the admissibility of confession made before a police officer as evidence. It is necessary to place on record that POTA had diluted many provisions of TADA: the period in police custody was reduced from 60 to 30 days; the period of judicial custody was brought down from one year to 180 days; and the minimum punishment was scaled down from five to three years. And now, we are going to have an even milder Act.

Has the terrorist threat abated? Have we controlled cross-border terrorism in J-K? Have the insurgent groups of North-East been put down? On the one hand, we have been crying hoarse at all international fora that India is a victim of cross-border terrorism, that the ISI is promoting fundamentalism within the country, that Bangladesh is sheltering North-East’s insurgent groups, and in the same breath, we have been systematically blunting our anti-terror laws. It is indeed most unfortunate that the leaders of the country are playing political games with the country’s national security.

How are other countries responding to the challenge? Soon after 9/11, on October 26, 2001, President Bush approved the USA Patriot Act to deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world. The Act gave sweeping powers to domestic law enforcement and international intelligence agencies. The US President also signed a Military Order on November 13, 2001, authorising the detention, treatment and trial of certain non-citizens as part of the war against terrorism. It stated that the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, had created a situation where it was ‘‘not practicable to apply in military commissions under this order the principles of law and the rules of evidence generally recognised in the trial of criminal cases in the United States district courts’’.

The UK already had Terrorism Act, 2000, with a comprehensive definition of terrorism. In the wake of 9/11, another Anti-Terrorism Crime and Security Act (ATCSA), 2001, was passed, which is even wider in scope and includes provisions for additional powers to the police, measures relating to information sharing and security of airports and laboratories. The ATCS Act further empowers the Secretary of State to ‘‘certify’’ an individual as an international terrorist if the Secretary of State ‘‘reasonably’’ (a) believes that the concerned individual’s presence in the UK is ‘‘a risk to national security’’; and (b) ‘‘suspects that the person is a terrorist’’. Upon certification, a non-UK national can be detained without charge or trial for an unspecified and unlimited period of time if the concerned individual’s removal or deportation from the UK cannot be effected. Can we imagine having such a provision in our laws in our country? France, Canada, Australia and Japan also enacted new laws or made the provisions in existing anti-terror laws more stringent after 9/11.

The above analysis brings out two striking features. Firstly, that we took one step forward when we enacted TADA but since then we have taken two steps backwards, one when we passed a diluted POTA and the other when we are going to have a milder UAPA. All other countries have moved forward only by enacting stricter laws or filling up the lacunae in their existing laws. Secondly, there has been no political tug-of-war in other countries over the enactment of anti-terror laws. Does is not show our lack of seriousness in meeting the greatest threat to national security?

The tragedy of the situation today is that even though we have been grappling with terror in this country for the last nearly 50 years (ever since Phizo raised the banner of revolt in the Naga Hills), we have yet to formulate our anti-terror policy and continue to dilly-dally with our anti-terror laws.

The Security Council Resolution 1373 (2001), while expressing its ‘‘unequivocal condemnation’’ of the terrorist acts as ‘‘threats to international peace and security’’, called upon all the states to take comprehensive measures to freeze without delay funds and other financial assets of persons who commit, or attempt to commit terrorist acts, and ensure that any person who participates in terrorist acts is brought to justice, etc. It is very doubtful if the mild UAPA will meet the requirements of the Security Council Resolution.

Lord Denning was of the view that ‘‘the freedom of the individual must take second place to the security of the State’’. In our country, unfortunately, political considerations take precedence over all other factors, including national security.

UN facing 'democracy deficit': Manmohan

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the United Nations was facing "democracy deficit" and called for a "sustained commitment" to democratise its functioning to successfully deal with global challenges -- security, economic and environment -- and expand its Security Council to include countries like India.
"The expansion of the UN Security Council, in the category of both permanent and non-permanent members, and the inclusion of countries like India as permanent members, would be a first step in the process of making the UN a truly representative body," Singh said in his maiden address at the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

I think this is a completely appropriate statement from PM and it is absolutely right.

Of this World, On Her Own Terms

Ugar Akinci writes @ Living on the Planet - Of this World, On Her Own Terms

The Washington Post caption: "In a nearly empty Olympic Stadium Friday morning, a woman wearing a track singlet over a traditional Muslim hijab, its white hood imprinted with the flag of Bahrain, set a national record in the 100-meter qualifying heats. So did a woman from Afghanistan, the first to represent her nation in the Olympics, who ran in loose-fitting pants and a T-shirt and finished 62nd out of 63 competitors."

When I first saw this front page photo I took a hard double-take because I've never before seen a woman in hijab running the 100-meters in an olympic competition.

Then I thought to myself, would I have the same reaction if, let's say, an Israeli athlete was running men's 100-meter with a yarmulka on his head? Probably not.

This lady is clearly not an Islamist because a true Wahhabi-style Islamist would not even appear on the same track with "naked" women from "infidel" nations.

This Bahrainian (correct?) woman (what a brave soul!) definitely wanted to be a part of this international event. She obviously did not want to miss out on being "a part of the action." Athens was the "place to be." So, there is no rejection or renunciation there.

But there is also this personal accounting, this struggle for personal dignity and identity. Perhaps it was out of her own free will, or perhaps it was due to a jealous husband, a disciplinarian father/brother/family, whatever. But for one reason or another, she was compelled to wear the hijab.

She probably said, "OK, fine, where's my hijab?" because she was intent on "taking care of business." The business of the Olympics and competing at a top-notch international level, that is.

And then a time will probably come when the Muslim ladies, handicapped due to the weight and non-aerodynamic qualities of the fabric they are wrapped in, will realize that they cannot become the fastest as long as they train and run covered with fabric from head to toe. That's my personal guess.

It's not politics. It's not religion. It's physics.

Then there will be a second round of reckoning for them -- would they continue to be "also ran"s?

Or would they realy want to go for it, even if it means wearing modern running gear, like all their competitors do? That's a choice they will have to make, not today, not immediately, but sometime in the future, eventually. It's waiting for them.

Sometimes form follows the function, and not the politics.

The non-hijab form that the Western politics could not dictate to the Muslims, could cut inroads into Islam through the functionality and physical dictates of top-level Olympic competition. (Chalk up another one for Fukuyama.)

Which Greece ?

ugur akinci writes @ Living on the Planet - Which Greece?

I love to watch the Olympics. I love the competition, the effort, the drive for excellence, and the whole youthful atmosphere... 16, 17, 18 year olds teaching us old geezers how to persevere and rise to the occasion under pressure-cooker conditions.

This year, while watching the Olympics, two meditations insist to take the front seat to my other thoughts and emotions:

1) Empty seats. Am I the only one noticing that most of the seats in those expensive stadiums and swimming halls are empty? Especially the gymnastics is a pain to watch. Basketball, the same story. An Athenian interviewed by (U.S.) National Public Radio said the tickets are so expensive that most Greeks cannot afford to attend their own Olympics.

What an irony. At the home of Olympic games, the owner of the house cannot afford to sit together with the guests.

Perhaps the whole terror scare played a part in the low attendance record. But whatever it is, there seems to be some truth to speculations by some olympiad observers that Greece will not be able to pay the $10 billion that she dished out for the games, and that the financial consequences for Greece would be felt for some time to come.

2) Ancient Greece of Multi Gods vs. Orthodox Christian Greece of the 21st Century. OK, this may not be the most elegant way of putting it but I really believe that Ancient Greece probably has as much in common with Modern Greece as Hittites have with Modern Turkey -- that is, very little, except the geography.

I cannot imagine a starker contrast than that between the rough and tumble athletes of the old, cussing, cursing, wine drinking, racing naked, scheming and competing with Gods (plural, a plethora of them), the ancient Greece where MAN was the measure of all things possible and precious, where RATIONALITY got its first kickstart, REASON, the frail vulnerable lonely HUMAN REASON, took its first trembling steps towards circles, triangles, the math, the moon, the planets and beyond, and where the HUMAN CONDITION, with its tragedy, comedy, beauty and temporal brevity of it all, stood in the heart of the mystery of existence... The Odyssey of MAN leaving his comfortable confines and through the terror of the unknown trying to go back home again...

... versus the Orthodox Christian Greece of our day, with a NATIONAL religion, a deep seated mysticism going back to the "Desert Fathers" ... are these the same Greece's?

Or is it just a geographical illusion played on our senses by a mind that telescopes time?

Every time I speak to a contemporary Greek it is obvious that that mischievous, iconoclast zest for life, that ZORBA wine coursing in the veins for human blood, is of course still there.

But I do not know enough about the Greek character or culture to discern whether the political zealotry and the collective unease that prompted Greece to take a few disasterous political adventures too many in the 20th century should be attributed to:

1) PLATO's Greece where the conceited philosopher-king, who has read more books than anybody else, drunk with hubris, took the country by the throat in unexamined directions (see, Karl Popper, "The Open Society and Its Enemies"), or

2) the relatively new Greece shaped in the crucible of British and French nationalism, a new nation which for too long found its sharpest self-definition in anti-Turkism, with its militaristic-nationalistic-Orthodox pulse trying to redeem a re-discovered history, a Greece that tests an ancient hypothesis through a new masculine reflex, at times bordering a Hellenistic crusade?

Which Greece am I watching, I ask myself, as I sit before my TV set, drinking in the gorgeous Greek countryside, the blue endless sea and the white-washed houses, the olive groves and the overloaded donkeys, the winding village trails, the bees and flies buzzing under the hot August sun darting in and out of the purple thistle and wild oregano bushes, and patient smiling folks, aging gentlemen with curled moustaches and village ladies with kerchiefs carrying freshly picked tomatoes and eggs in their baskets, people that look so much like their Anatolian counterparts on the other side of the Aegean...

Which Greece am I watching, I keep wondering as Michael Phelps racks up one medal after another... as the diminuitive Turkish Hercules, like super ants, lift twice and thrice their body weights and shatter world records...

The Greece of Thales, Plato, Aristotle and Socrates... or Metaxas, Venizelos, Grivas and Sampson?

And Jesus, who constantly stressed that this world was nothing and that the "real kingdom" was that "of my Father" on the other side... would he have approved all this jumping and running and jostling in Christian Greece for the highest, fastest, strongest, just to beat the other guy to the punch, for two cents worth of fleeting fame and fortune?

As Baltimore's hometown boy-wonder Michael Phelps steps out of the chrome blue pool dripping gold, I close my eyes for a commercial break and silently send a pair of doves from my heart, pure shimmering white doves, fluttering from the shores of the good country where I was born and raised, to the other shore of the Aegean where the oldest experiment of the human mind is still unfolding in all its beauty and with all its questions.

Big B's donation of Rs 1.1m clears dues of 42 AP farmers

The plight of farmers in Andhra Pradesh moved Amitabh Bachchan so much that the superstar donated Rs 1.1 million for them. "I wish we can focus on much larger issues than me," said Bachchan.

"When I was shooting in Visakhapatnam for Anil Sharma's Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon', I read in the papers that farmers in Andhra Pradesh are committing suicide for the loans for relatively small amounts of money like Rs 30,000, which they can't repay."

"I was almost in tears. Why can't we all extend a small hand of support to the needy?" The Rs 1.1 million donated by Bachchan has paid off 42 Andhra Pradesh farmers.

"There're other big industrialists who can come forward to bail out other farmers. Just rustle their pockets and lives are saved. It's unfortunate that I can't do more for people. The minute I do, political meanings are read into my action."

I wish all the corrupt politicians, officials, people gets a wake up call with this gesture of BIG B and stop looting the public wealth like money,rice,goods,etc.. that are meant for reaching the needy.

BIG B, U HAVE BECOME A SUPER HERO FOR ME NOW.

World Bank is Evil but Ford money is just right

Source: For these economists, World Bank is Evil but Ford money is just right

Today, five ‘‘Left’’ economists threatened to give up their assignments with the Planning Commission in protest against the World Bank representative’s inclusion in the commission’s review panel. Their argument: it’s Washington that pulls the World Bank’s pursestrings.

What they did not mention, in their letter to chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, is the fact that two of them are founding members of an international economic research group set up with help from the United States-based Ford Foundation.

The foundation had an investment portfolio of $9.8 billion last year, a chunk invested in US and international equities. And its audit is done by the very foreign PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Ignoring the fact that its government in West Bengal has been using foreign consultants to showcase its success stories, the Left has been raising the bogey of ‘‘indirect surrender of sovereignty’’ to Americans, because of the commission’s decision to include a World Bank, an ADB representative and a Mckinsey (US-based multinational business consultancy firm) executive in one of the mid-term review panels.

The five economists, Prabhat Patnaik, Utsa Patnaik, C P Chandrasekhar, Jayati Ghosh and T M Thomas Issac, claim that the Planning Commission is not a ‘‘debating society’’ but an ‘‘organ of the Indian State.’’ Their letter says: ‘‘A sovereign State is necessarily exclusionary, in the sense that its organs must exclude personnel owing allegiance to, or under the control/patronage of a foreign sovereign state.’’

It goes on to insist: ‘‘There can be absolutely no doubt about the fact that the World Bank and the ADB are under the control of foreign states: the US Administration routinely uses the threat of withholding World Bank loans as a means of putting political pressure on foreign governments.’’

And as for McKinsey, the economists said: ‘‘The firm has been getting consultancy contracts all over the world not because of its brilliance but because it enjoys the patronage of the US state (and other developed country States).’’

Now contrast these reasons with the fact that IDEAS, International Development Economics Associates, a group of leading ‘‘progressive’’ economists and set up with help from Ford Foundation includes two of the protestors: Ghosh and Chandrasekhar.

IDEAS was set up after a conference in South Africa in September 2001. The conference was organised with support from the US-based Ford Foundation.

When asked about this apparent double-standard, Chandrasekhar said: ‘‘The Ford Foundation does help research work in various Third World Countries.’’

‘‘We are protesting against the inclusion of representatives of institutions whose voting powers are controlled by the Americans,’’ he said. ‘‘How can they be allowed to make a statement in our planning process?’’

That IDEAS operates out of London and receives help from UN organisations which, in turn, receive money from the West, is something Chandrasekhar doesn’t feel a need to explain.

He claimed that economists involved with IDEAs are renowned the world over for trying ‘‘to develop alternatives to the current mainstream economics.’’ That doesn’t take away from the fact that IDEAS would not have been there had it not been for the very American Ford Foundation.

Solaris Goes Open Source

Source: Solaris Goes Open Source

When Solaris 10 is released late this year, Sun Microsystems Inc. will be culminating years of development work on the operating system, as well as launching a major open-source initiative to go with it.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company is on track to deliver on a new strategy, conceived some six years ago, of developing and selling Solaris but also offering the code to the open-source community, Sun executives told eWEEK in interviews last week.

Sun's goal is to use the open-sourcing of Solaris to drive a turnaround of the company's software business, which has lost mind share, if not market share, in the Linux and Windows crossfire. Sun wants to foster a better internal software development process, work more closely with the community and then be able to drive innovation outside its own walls, increasing Solaris' penetration and pushing it into new markets, executives said.

But Sun still has to clear a few hurdles before opening Solaris by year's end. The company has to ensure that it has the legal permissions necessary to make each line of code available, including the Unix kernel on which it's based. This onerous process could ultimately delay the release of the open-source program when Solaris 10 is ready to ship commercially, which is scheduled for December, officials said.

This is going to be interesting, looks like a survival strategy for SUN.

Prepare for Disillusionment With RFID - Gartner

Jeff Woods writes Prepare for Disillusionment With RFID

In the short term, radio frequency identification cannot live up to the promises that have been made for the technology. When this fact becomes obvious, RFID users will experience the inevitable disillusionment.

The benefits of radio frequency identification have been oversold, and RFID cannot live up to the near-term promises that have been made for this technology. This means that RFID will soon be engendering a period of disillusionment, when at least 50 percent of RFID projects are likely to fail. However, Gartner remains positive about the technology for the long term, and RFID will be one of the most-strategic technologies that enterprises will embrace through 2018. Prepare for the coming Trough of Disillusionment in the Hype Cycle by:

  • Distancing your RFID projects from others' projects to avoid getting caught in the downdraft
  • Getting a realistic message about RFID into your organization
  • Making sure that your vendors can survive a downturn in RFID spending
  • Ensuring that you can inexpensively support RFID-labeling projects
  • Having a written RFID assessment that demonstrates that your RFID strategy is based on sound, well-thought-out concepts

IBM open-sources speech code

IBM is donating some of its software for speech-enabling applications to two open-source organizations: the Apache Software Foundation and the Eclipse Foundation. Big Blue announced its plans at last week's SpeechTEK 2004 Conference to "spur the availability of speech-enabled applications by making it easier and more attractive for developers to build and add speech recognition capability in a standardized way."

To the Apache group, IBM is donating Reusable Dialog Components (RDCs), which are JSP tags developed by IBM Research. The RDCs enable dynamic development of voice applications and multimodal user interfaces. "Multimodal" refers to applications that provide users with a choice of input sources, generally including voice, keypad, keyboard, mouse and stylus. Output takes the form of spoken prompts, audio and/or graphical displays. JSPs that incorporate RDC tags automatically generate W3C VoiceXML 2.0 at runtime, providing a standard basis for speech applications.

To Eclipse, IBM is donating speech mark-up editors designed to make it easier for developers to write standards-based speech applications, and to create and utilize RDCs within those applications. The Eclipse donation is actually part of the initial formation of a project for open-source tools for voice application development, which will involve several other companies in the VoiceXML community, the company says.

The two donations combined are valued at $10 million, an IBM spokesperson says.

Some of the companies joining IBM in this open-source initiative include AT&T, Avaya, Cisco, Genesys, Motorola, Nortel, ScanSoft, Siebel and Voice Partners.

Sun Introduces First Pay-for-Use Computing Grid

Source: Digital Silence - Hardware, Software and Technology News

Sun intends to offer a diverse set of computing plans and will also work with partners on a wholesale basis to take this capability to various industries and geographic markets. This online computing grid gives customers the powerful combination of the Solaris Operating System (OS), with extraordinary security and virtualization capabilities, based on AMD Opteron and SPARC microprocessors.

Powerful resources are now available to any customer seeking affordable, no-risk computing cycles on an on-demand basis without ownership or onerous outsourcing contracts. "We are staking out new ground -- taking our intellectual property and turning it into pay-for-use network services. To date, the world has taken IT infrastructure and mapped it to customer workloads," said Jonathan Schwartz, president and COO at Sun. "This reverses that trend to give customers an opportunity to leverage dramatically lower shared services costs structure to which they will map their workloads. What Salesforce.com does for sales force automation and eBay does for auctions, we are planning on doing for technology infrastructure."

Sun's new offering will initially target non-transactional workloads. For example, simulations, modeling, rendering -- in general, workloads optimized for grid deployments can simply and securely take advantage of Sun's new utility grid offering. Developers, enterprises and governments will now be able to easily use compute power on an hourly basis, delivering the first realistic, grid-based, on-demand computing utility ever introduced in the IT industry. Another major area of interest will be software testing on standardized grids.

This utility grid solution can provide customers with the ability to gain secure and agile access to thousands of CPUs in Sun's compute-rich environment. These compute capabilities are aimed at customers and developers looking for fast, flexible access to resources needed to test, design and develop a wide range of applications or even conduct on-the-fly activities.

Introductory pricing will be $1/CPU, per hour (U.S. list price). Also, for a limited time, developers can get one week's free access to Sun's latest hardware, software and solutions. For more information, visit
www.sun.com/tech-center.

Need to see whats going to happend with this new business model. Ofcourse, its the era of pay per use, but whether Sun emerge as a winner needs to be seen.
