October 31, 2004First Attempt at GMAT TestFinally after a month of deciding to embark on GMAT prep, i took the first test today and I scored 640, which surprised me. I thought I would end up doing somewhere arround 600. I scored 640 by missing almost 7 questions in quant section. I could not believe that the testing engine told me my time is up even when though there is about 15 mins time left in that section according to my estimate. Probably I was not reading the time properly, next time I need to be more observant. One thing is sure, I screwed up the essay writing section completely. I need to do a little bit more practicing on that. If the current trend continues, I think scoring a 700+ will not be a big deal at all, so excited at the feeling itself. But I have observed a few things today while taking the test. #1 I need to be more relaxed and stay calm Anyways, a very good starting, I am happy and confident that I will come out with a flying score. Wish me best of luck.

October 27, 2004If Gadhi was alive ?Perhaps more bizarre is the fact that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was sitting with Gandhi just before Gandhi walked to his death. There have also been questions about why the Mahatma was not rushed to hospital and instead taken inside his living quarters in Birla Bhavan. Even though there was no way Gandhi’s frail body could have survived three bullets, it was odd, at the very least, that he was taken inside the house rather than to a hospital. Like all assassinations that have taken place in post-Independence India, there has been little clarity about what Gandhi’s conspirators sought to achieve. While broad hints have been dropped now and again about how big powers hate leaders with grassroots support and independent minds, investigators have seldom gone beyond the motive of a Nathuram Godse, a Beant Singh (one of Indira Gandhi’s killers) or a Dhanu (Rajiv Gandhi’s suicide bomber). It would be interesting to do an analysis of what would have happened if Gandhi had not been killed. Would he have lived to be 100 or 125, as he so desired? If he had lived to 100, he would have been around till 1969, till which time India had seen two wars with Pakistan and one with China. It would have also been battered by, besides, scores of riots and other miseries. The question is: would these wars have taken place if Gandhi had been around? Dear Manager, They Need a Build MachineTheServerSide.com - TSS Featured Entry Dear Manager, When I talk with the developers on your team, they tell me they need a dedicated build machine. I'm partly to blame. See, I've been showing them a free build scheduler that, after just a few minutes of configuration, will continuously build your software with no human intervention. That's good for them, and it's even better for you. Let me tell you why.
Here's how it works: Every hour, for example, and only if new work has done, the build scheduler checks out a fresh copy of your project from version control and attempts to build the project. The build process includes compiling all of your project's source files, running an arbitrary number of tests, and generating any other build artifacts, such as project metrics. If, for any reason, the build process is unsuccessful, then the build scheduler can notify you via email, your cell phone, RSS, or a visual device such as a lava lamp. You can also use your web browser to view the current status of the build, or any prior build. Running builds throughout the day whenever changes are made to the project is a tireless job, which is exactly why you don't want your developers doing it. They would rather focus their time and energy on writing quality code that ultimately helps you deliver valuable software to your customers. But building the software on a frequent interval is also an important job because finding and fixing integration problems right before a release---when you have the lowest tolerance for risk---can be costly. With the build scheduler constantly integrating your software, problems are detected almost as soon as they're introduced, giving your team the maximum amount of time to fix those problems before they start to compound. In turn, you receive the benefit of knowing the health of the software all day, every day. Your developers already understand the value of continuous builds. They know getting constant feedback about the build will help them stay on track. They know staying on track is equally important to you. And they're happy to invest a few minutes setting up a build scheduler that continues to pay back precious dividends: time and money. There's just one minor problem. Thankfully, it's one of those unique problems that can be quickly solved with a one-time expenditure. That's where you can help by approving that expenditure. Simply put, your project can't afford not to have a dedicated build machine. Now, you might be thinking that with all the machines on developers' desks you already have plenty of horsepower for continuous builds. But it's not about horsepower; it's about availability and independence. Running continuous builds on a development machine will slow down the developer who owns that machine. The money you save by not purchasing a dedicated build machine will quickly be overrun by paying a developer to work slower. Additionally, a dedicated build machine is independent in the sense that it hasn't been biased toward any particular developer. It takes what's in version control to be all that's necessary to create a build. If the build succeeds on the dedicated build machine, it means that anyone on the project can create a build given access to your version control system. You get the peace of mind of knowing that everything that goes into the release is safely tucked away in a centralized repository. Finally, please allow me to summarize by presenting the economics that I continue to see ignored by your competitors. Consider that on average your ten-person development team costs, conservatively, $500 per hour. (It's probably more like $1000 per hour when you consider all the care and feeding expenses.) If your team spends a total of two hours over the life of the project debugging integration problems (start counting whenever you hear a developer cry "But it works on my machine!"), then you've already paid for a respectable build machine. Then when you consider that those debugging sessions are delaying your product going to market, you really can't afford not to have a dedicated build machine. I hope this helps clarify what you may have heard about continuous integration. If you have any questions or concerns, let me know. October 13, 2004Naxalism - DemocracyA phenomenon is going on in Andhra Pradesh. The new congress govt. under the aegis of Hon. C.M Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara reddy, has made tremendous progress in bringing the Naxalites to the discussion table. The leaders of the movement who have been under ground for almost 20years came out into public and participating in public functions/rallies. This is certainly an amazing phenomenon to watch. Naxalites came out with a certain agenda to make sure that their demands are honored by the, some of them are good and some of them are outrageous. They are standing behind the failed leninist/maoist principles which have failed in Soviet Uniona and China. But come to think of it, a rational usage of the policies might have very positive effect in Indian society which is divided grossly on caste lines (No matter which religion you belong to, you will have a caste in India). Naxalites are in favor of forming a new Telangana State, that means they want to come into main stream politics. As there is huge movement going on to form Telangana state, Naxalites might have recognized this as an opportunity to get into main stream politics. Telangana seems to be inevitable in the near future with the kind of movement that is going on now. I am completely in favor of Naxalites coming into mainstream politics, as it will reinforce that Vote is mightier that gun. What I really wish is that, they join main stream politics even with out the state being divided along the regional lines. It does not matter what kind of idealism they belong to, as long as people vote them into power that idealism is a good one and the amazing power of democracy is 'Self Correction' during elections that come every 5 years and sometimes intermitantly. Naxalites should join the main stream politics and at the same time honor the Indian Constitution, that will be the victory for democracy. That might be a new dawn to the Indian politics which have become highly corrupt now.

Ramdhan, Any military confrontation in itself is senseless. But seen in a larger context, the picture may be different. The problem is one of trust. There simply is not enough trust to warrant a climbdown, even if Pakistan were to agree tomorrow. Here's my recent post on this. Never withdraw our troops from Siachen Glacier Our nation was taken to the cleaners by Nehru who sold out the Indus river water to Pakistan with the infamous one sided perpetual Indus water treaty that gave away more than 84.6% of river water to Pakistan. It was the most treacherous thing done by Nehru. Added to that all the catchments areas that are lying in J&K was occupied by Pakistan and the Pakistanis even exchanged some of our land with china. Pakistanis sent its troops to the Siachen Glacier that feeds the Indus river to occupy and control it. We should have stood for the independence of Tibet which is the catchment area of many of our main rivers. Yet the lack of concern by Nehru and the congress party clearly shows that Nehru was a traitor and the talk that Nehru's grandfather was a muslim appears to be true. The news that even Subash Chandra Bose was in India and was living in hiding in fear of Nehru is bound to raise doubts about the true nature of Nehru in the minds of Indians. Well said Kumar. Even before the Indus river treaty, That selfish custard called Nehru wanted to be PM. This is why Jinnah wanted Pakistan as they both wanted glory as India's first PM. There is something in an Indian's blood that makes a mockery of ethics, honesty and pride in one's actions. It is not a surprise that today there exists over a billion Indians with poor values. The glacier basin is of no strategic value-the region is only of use to geologists and climbers. further, the restoration of the environment will cost probably a few billion dollars to remove all unexploded munitions and garbage. I felt very stressed up and wanted to work out, its too sunny to go out for rollerblading, which I have been doing for a couple of months. So, I decided to go and play Racquetball. I am doing this after so many months and it actually felt really good. I am usually weak in racquet games, but today I realized that I need to be more agile and do calculated moves and play. After this thought came to my mind, immediately my game imporoved a lot. The same rules applies to day to day life too, one needs to be agile, alert and anticipate the way things will move and go along with the flow so as to grow fast. At the same time, one needs to develop special techniques wich help them to become exceptional.

Cringely Like many of us, Andrew Greig put a WiFi access point in his house so he could share his broadband Internet connection. But like hardly any of us, Andrew uses his WiFi network for Internet, television, and telephone. He cancelled his telephone line and cable TV service. Then his neighbors dropped-by, saw what Andrew had done, and they cancelled their telephone and cable TV services, too, many of them without having a wired broadband connection of their own. They get their service from Andrew, who added an inline amplifier and put a better antenna in his attic. Now most of Andrew's neighborhood is watching digital TV with full PVR capability, making unmetered VoIP telephone calls, and downloading data at prodigious rates thanks to shared bandwidth. Is this the future of home communications and entertainment? It could be, five years from now, if Andrew Greig has anything to say about it. The advantage Andrew Greig has over most of the rest of us is that he works for Starnix, an international Open Source software and services consultancy in Toronto, Canada. Starnix, which deals with huge corporate clients, has the brain power to get running what I described above. And it goes much further than that simple introduction. Somewhere in Andrew's house is a hefty Linux server running many applications, including an Asterisk Open Source VoIP software PBX. There is no desktop PC in Andrew's house. Instead, he runs a Linux thin client on a Sharp Zaurus SL-6000 Linux PDA. Sitting in its cradle on Andrew's desk at home, the Zaurus (running a special copy of Debian Linux, NOT as shipped by Sharp) connects to a full-size keyboard and VGA display, and runs applications on the server. Another cradle, monitor and keyboard are at Andrew's office, where he also doesn't have a PC. Walking around in his house, the Zaurus (equipped with a tri-mode communications card) is a WiFi VoIP phone running through the Asterisk PBX and connecting to the Vonage VoIP network. Walking out of his house, the Zaurus automatically converts to the local mobile phone carrier, though with a data connection that still runs back through Vonage. At Starbucks, it's a Wifi Vonage phone. At Andrew's office, it is a WiFi extension to the office Asterisk PBX AND to Andrew's home PBX. That's one PDA doing the job of two desktop PCs, a notebook PC, and three telephones. Yeah, but what about that wireless TV? How does that work? Andrew's server runs Myth TV, an Open Source digital video recorder application, storing on disk in MPEG-4 format (1.5-2 megabits-per-second) more than 30,000 TV episodes, movies and MP3 music files. "As each new user comes online, I add another TV card to the system so they can watch live TV," says Andrew, "but since there are only so many episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, nearly everything that isn't news or sports is typically served from disk with full ability to jump forward or back at will. We've reached the point now where the PVR has so much in storage already that it is set to simply record anything that isn't already on disk." Think about it. These folks up in Canada can not only watch everything we can watch on TV, on a whim they can watch every episode of the original Star Trek in the order they were broadcast ALL ON ONE WEEKEND. I wouldn't do that, true, but I also CAN'T do that. At this point, intellectual property lawyers are supposed to start reaching for their telephones to call Canada, but it won't do any good because all this content is perfectly legal and here's how. With the exception of local channels, which come from an antenna, all of Andrew's video content comes from a C-band (big dish) satellite receiver (receivers, actually), and is fully paid for. "I buy the channels just like a cable system does or a motel that wants to offer HBO, from the National Programming Service," says Andrew. "And as a result I pay wholesale prices. People don't realize how much of a markup there in is the cable business. The Discovery Networks, for example, cost me $0.26 per customer per month. The IP laws in both the U.S. and Canada say that if I have legal access to this content I can store and use it. And the over-the-air channels, of course, are free." Remember how in the go-go Internet days of three to four years ago, we used to talk about "disintermediation?" That was using technology to remove middle men from transactions. Well, what Andrew Greig is doing is dis-intermediating both the telephone and TV cable companies. And he'd like to dis-intermediate the Internet Service Providers, too. Starnix is getting ready to take its technology on the road, so to speak, selling and licensing it to all comers. One plan is to create a wireless ISP offering these services, growing it around what Andrew calls "wireless sweet spots." The difference between a "hotspot" and a "sweet spot" is that a sweet spot is both hot AND cheap. "We were installing a wireless network in a large hospital and showed them that there were economies of scale to be gained from lighting four of the fiber pairs coming-in from their ISP, rather than two. Their costs go down and we benefit from that lower pricing and pick up the additional bandwidth for wireless service outside the hospital." Since Starnix installs wireless networks all over (other Starnix sites include the Time-Warner intergalactic HQ in New York), this is a provisioning model that could be used over and over. Unlike most other wireless networks, Starnix uses 802.11a, which matches the 54 megabits-per-second speed of 802.11g, but does so in the five GHz band where there is less interference. Even more important, while 802.11g (and -b) have a maximum of only three non-conflicting channels, 802.11a in North America supports 24 non-conflicting channels for at least eight times the total bandwidth. This would all be just an interesting and very nerdly proof of concept except that Starnix has a global reputation (one of their wireless network customers is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police -- Canada's more colorful version of the FBI), and the Canadian Government is putting some money into helping establish the wireless ISP. But there is an industrial or commercial side to this, too. Right now, OEMs are lining-up to bring this Starnix model of hardware, software, and connectivity to the workplace. "It's the six percent solution," says Greig. "Businesses don't want to admit this, but they spend up to 12 percent of gross revenues on IT including communications. By going to Open Source and thin clients and VoIP we could cover all their needs for half that cost -- six percent. No separate hardware, software, bandwidth, or support costs, just a flat six percent. We have large partners right now who are getting ready to take this proposition to market." What's happening in Andrew Greig's neighborhood is going to happen in three to five years in many neighborhoods. The look will be slightly different with technologies like WiMax wireless networking playing a role. Moore's Law, too, is going to have a significant impact on bringing down the cost of implementing this dream. That Starnix thin client needed to drive your TV costs $250 in volume today but three years from now it will cost $70. Or maybe the thin client will be in the TV, itself. With Linux proliferating in consumer devices that's almost a sure thing since even if Sony doesn't do it some firmware hacker will. That's the big lesson here, not that some guys up in Canada can run their own Star Trek marathon, but that Open Source software is leading to digital devices being used in large volumes in ways their designers never envisioned. This takes control of the network out of the hands of the providers and into the hands of the users. And the outcome doesn't have to be some socialistic information economy. On the contrary, it means that whole new business models will appear to take advantage of the fact that all types of communications and all types of content will be able to reach all parts of the market with almost no friction. Following that line of thought, even I might find a way to make a living. Maybe.

Laszlo applications are written in LZX, a standards-driven XML and JavaScript description language that enables a declarative, text-based development process. LZX supports rapid prototyping, collaborative software development and long term code maintenance. This one looks really really good, I would love to dig into this and try to explore in the comin days.

Finally they said, all you guys gave wonderful answers and they asked to figure ourselves who deserves the book and immediately I lifted my hand and they gave the book to me. The book is Overachievement - The New Model For Exceptional Performance I started reading the book and its a phenomenal book, giving a new insights on human behaviour under high pressure. I just felt as if God has given me this book with the kind of metal tubulence that I am going through now. I am just into a couple of chapters and the experience of reading this book is awesome. If you get a chance read this book.
