Muslims Around the World Unite for Katrina Victims

Throughout the day on Friday, 9/2005, brothers from an MSN Group, a Yahoo group, and I worked together to work out a fundraising plan for the victims of Katrina. While the efforts are ongoing, we do have in place a means by which you can make a finacial contribution, should you like to do so. We have selected two charities that your donations will be forwarded to, and there may be a third. We will update the website, as more information becomes available.

These charities are known for having low overhead, which means that the majority of what you donate will go where it was intended, to the people and not the administrators.

At this time we have two methods of contribution available, PayPal and Western Union. As soon as it is available we will also be accepting donations by wire transfer.

Please, reach into your hearts, and your bank accounts, and help us to help those who have been stricken in this tragedy. Please go to Muslims Around the World Unite for Katrina Victims, and make your donation, today.

The fundraising team thanks you, and those who will recieve your help thank you, in advance, for your generosity.

Peace,
Laila Clark

Katrina Destroyed Everything

The latest hurricane Katrina practically swept away everything in its path as it crossed from sea to land. It lifted huge casino buildings that were on the sea and dropped them on the land. It levelled miles and miles of houses and left them with bare foundations. The devastation is unprecedented in united states. The sad part is that there is no count of the number of people who might not have evacuated and might have become victims of Katrina's fury. Its possible that many of them have died. It is totally totally devastating to watch the devastation created by Katrina.

Please donate as much as you can to help the victims. I will again try to set up a payment gateway to raise funds.

Lakshmi Bai - Jhansi Ki Rani

Sushmita Sen is the first India lady who won Miss Universe title in 1994 at the age of 19. Then I was still in college and I remember being totally crazy about her. I am still crazy about her though :-). She is a very fascinating lady who lives a very dynamic life. I was reading an interview of her @ Source: I want it all - money, fame, relationships... I love my life: Sushmita.

I always know Lakshmi Bai as 'Jhansi Ki Rani', a brave heart who ferociously faought British in Sepoy Mutiny. But, this statement made by Sushmita in the interview gave me a totally new perspective:

For me Rani Lakshmibai is so fascinating — in India they always say, the sons of the mother are fighting for her. This is the one time in history that a mother fought for her son. And I am dying to make this film.

DO NOT MAKE IODISED SALT COMPULSORY.

Dear Mallika,

what a fascinating website! I’m so glad Neelam mandal insisted / asked us to browse through it. We our waging a “War” against our Country’s “ Health” Ministry who seem hell bent on making iodised salt compulsory when the whole world is veering towards naturally grown/ organically grown edibles. Any suggestions from readers as to how we can , “ win this war”?

(And the letter follows here)

To
The Secretary,
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Nirman Bhavan,
New Delhi.

Re. Compulsory Iodisation of Salt.

Dear Sir,

We strongly object to the compulsory iodisation of salt.

1. It is our right as consumers to decide what kind of salt we wish to eat.
Nowhere is iodized salt mandatory – not in the USA, nor in UK, Austrialia, Switzerland, Mauritius, Turkey, etc.,etc.

As per draft Notification no GSR (340 E) the center is planning to ban the sale of all non-iodised salt in the country w.e.f 15.08.2005.
This is a move by the Health Dept. to fight iodine deficiency (which could cause cretinism) which they have observed in the sub-Himalayan region and which they say affects about 2% to 3% of the population.
If 2% to 3% are iodine deficient why should 96% to 97% of Indians be forced to eat iodized salt? Isn’t this measure akin to killing a fly with a sledge hammer?

2. As consumers it is our right to know which areas are iodine deficient, by how much and why? We need to see this proof printed in a recognized scientific journal before we are forced to consume potassium iodate. ( Pottasium Iodate is an expensive chemical imported at exhorbitant cost to the ex-chequer and not approved for iodisation of table salt in US, according to the Kirk Othmer Encyclopaedia. Infact Pottasium Iodate was labeled as “toxic, a poison” by the Ministry of Environment when the Ministry of Health first decided to introduce it in India more than a decade ago.
3. India is largely coastal and iodine is available naturally to all those living on the coast through the water, sea salt, fish, and even the AIR WE BREATHE!
Sea Salt (containing iodine in its natural form) was available till recently for .50 p to Re. 1 a kg. Then when iodised salt was made compulsory, major salt manufacturers stepped in and increased the price of compulsory iodised salt to Rs.7 - Rs 12 per kg. (And that when the cost of iodisation is only .2 paise per kg!)
It makes one wonder who is going to benefit by the compulsory iodisation policy. Not the common man … but salt manufacturers, procurers of the expensive potassium iodate and, ofcourse, those in the Govt keen on aiding and abetting them.
4. Endocrinologists say that before prescribing iodine to any patient the extent of his iodine deficiency in his system has to be determined.
Secondly, it is imperative to medically examine the urine of every one consuming iodine to ensure that excess iodine has been got rid off.
For excess iodine in the system can cause irreparable damage.
Does the Govt. have the infrastructure to monitor the amount of iodine deficiency in each individual? Does it have the infrastructure to monitor the urine of each individua.l to see that excess iodine is got rid off? Does it have the money to pay damages to all persons who will suffer from excess iodine in their systems?
Again, does it have the infrastructure to see that iodine is sprayed uniformly on all salt? In Gujarat unscrupulous salt companies are right now randomly spraying iodine on salt lying in the open & packaging this also in the open. There is absolutely no quality control!
5. Here’s what MARTINDALE, the Extra Pharmacopoea 27th Edition.
has to say about the damage excess iodine can cause to a persons system.
Toxic Effects of continued administration of iodine is known to lead to mental depression, nervousness, insomnia, sexual impotence, myxoedema and goiter. Hypersensitivity to iodine(Iodism) may occur actely or after prolonged adminstration and is characterised by coryza, headache, pain in the salivary glands, lachrymation, weakness, conjunctivitis, fever, laryngitis, bronchitis, and skin reactions including ioderma, erythema, acneform eruptions, urticaria, suppurative and haemorrhagic rashes. Vomitting metallic taste in the mouth, abdominal pain and diarrhoea are also known to occur. In extreme cases, death due to oedema of the glottis causing asphyxiation and pulmonary oedema are also recorded Iodides in breast milk are suspected to cause hypothyroidism or goiter in infants. Iodine given to the mother is also known to cause Thrombocytopenia which is hazardous to the foetus.
Iodised salt should carry a compulsory warning in red, bold letters that its usage may lead to allergies & thyrotoxicosis.
6. Experiments to make iodised salt compulsory were conducted in Holland and Tasmania. They were a flop & had to be discontinued. In Tasmania the incidence of Thyrotoxicosis in men increased by 8.3% ! England was also iodine deficient once upon a time. But instead of making iodised salt compulsory they embarked on a massive education program to educate the British to eat “right”. Today there is no iodine deficiency & iodised salt constitutes about 2.5% of the sale of all salt. Should we learn from these experiences or have the luxury of making our own blunders?
6. Indians are intelligent. They have made a mark in so many fields.
By depriving them of the CHOICE OF SALT they wish to eat you are equating them with cattle or morons not fit to make choices!
Why not, Like in the UK create an awareness that milling and polishing of rice and other grains removes their iodine content. Cereals, millets, pulses, leafy vegetables, roots and spices, nuts, fruits, milk and milk products, eggs, fish and even tap water contain iodine in its natural, absorbable form.
So basically, what you need to advocate is a healthy, balanced diet and clean drinking water as it is worms and drinking water polluted with animal and human excreta and water rich in calcium drawn from deep wells, can also cause iodine deficiency.
7. There are over 200 known trace elements in the body. Iodine is only one of them. Will the govt. next step be to introduce 200 trace elements in salt as well as anti-cholestrol agents as many Indians have heart problems?!!

In brief,
As Indians we demand our right to the choice of salt we wish to eat.
And if salt is iodised, iodisation must be properly monitored. A warning must be printed on each packet of the allergies & thyroid problems that could occur.
Even in iodine- deficient areas people should be given iodine with medical supervision & not by lay persons.

Yours sincerely,

KUMKUM SOMANI

Very lucidly spelt out by kumkum. We are in the process of a scientific and systematic review of the research on iodized salt. The findings point to major issues like: overstatement of magnitude of the problem due to methodological issues; lacunae in causal linkages by ignoring signifacant multi causality; flawed assesment of the impact of intervention i.e. iodized salt; and harmful effects of iodine not given due cognizance. The research till date has been a hegemony of one particular group and most of the research suffers from serious methodological flaws. To further compound the issue, many independent researchers, on finding something different from the existing dominant paradigm (iodized salt as panacea for goiter) have tended to ignore these in their final conclusions and recommendations! We forwarded our objections along with a 33 page copy of our review to the GOI in July 2005 but have yet to hear from them. Lets hope someone thinks of region based assessments of the problem and solutions.

IVY League Universities

One of the marvels of blog is that, you never know when you are going to learn new things from it. In a blog that I posted long time back I wrote 'Ivy League MBA colleges like harvard, stanford etc'. Today I received a message from a reader telling that Stanford is not an IVY League University. This prompted me to do some googling and found some fascinating information about IVY Leagues @ Ivy League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Members

The members of the Ivy League are, in alphabetical order:

Notable Programs

Many of the universities are well known for their top-rate graduate and professional programs (the acceptance rate at Harvard's medical school is around 5%). Some notable programs include:

India Needs More Entrepreneurs

Rajesh Jain writes another wonderful series of articles: India Need More Entrepreneurs in his Tech Talk.

For me, success and failure, profit and loss are two sides of the same coin. More important is the opportunity to influence the creation of tomorrow’s world. This is where I am trying to have my cake and eat it too – build my existing company with the help of a strong management team, and also invest in external companies to build out elements of the ecosystem. I think of this as entrepreneurship blended with hands-on, thesis-based investing.

It is during this journey that I have come to the conclusion that India needs many more entrepreneurs. The ones considering the path to entrepreneurship need to exorcise the fear of failure and focus on the journey. I was, for many years, a struggling (and failing) entrepreneur. But the passion and optimism never died. And today, it is perhaps stronger than ever before. We live only once. Entrepreneurship is perhaps the most exhilarating rides one can embark on. So, why not?

I absolutely love this photograph, which aptly conveys the message that coca-cola is depleting the water resouces in rural areas of India.

My Outsourced Life

Well, don't worry I am not outsourcing my life :-) It is a movie that is being made in Hollywood. Souce:
Outsourcing hits Hollywood- The Times of India

Jacobs' aides in this outsourcing saga were Honey K.Balani of the firm Brickworks, who handled his professional needs such as fixing appointments and researching for his articles, and Asha of Your Man in India (YMII), who handled personal tasks.

To begin with they answered his e-mails, fixed his appointments, ordered his groceries and bought his movie tickets, Jacobs said.

By the end of the month-long exercise, they were making weekly calls to his parents and reading his son bedtime stories. Honey Balani was even giving him story ideas for Esquire.

In one particularly capricious episode, Jacobs, after a domestic quarrel, outsourced a complaint against his wife to Asha.

Asha e-mails Julie on behalf of Jacobs: "Julie, I do understand your anger that I forgot to pick up the cash at the ATM.

I have been forgetful and I am sorry about that, but it does not change the fact that I love you very much." Asha also sends Julie an e-card with hugging teddy bears.

Well, this sounds perfect to me. I am already thinking in terms of outsourcing my numerous activities if I can find a reliable person in India, who I can work with. I am not sure if I will be doing it or not, however there is certainly a huge shift from 'Do it Yourself' to 'Oursource Your Stuff'.

Microsoft Windows in Telangana Telugu

AndhraPradesh has three regions - 'Andhra', 'Rayalaseema', and 'Telangana'. In all regions Telugu is the spoken language, but each region is quite different from others in terms of slang. A person from one region finds it really tough to understand the slang of the person from the other regions. I don't get into more details than that. Lets get into the fun part of the story now.
